    95 S2Avant with slight misfire

now my 95 avant has developed a slight misfire i am wondering how to sort this. will my car have a distributor plugs and leads or will it have coil packs etc? if it turns out that it has coil packs are these dear to replace - anyone have a rough estimate of the cost?

Lee you need to start a new thread for this, i've created one for you.

Cars after 93 use coil packs on the S2, OEM Coil packs are expensive £300 for 5 or you could try the 034 coilpacks from Corey.

        Re misfire

what is an 034 pack? is it the case that these coil packs are generally quite robust or do they fail often. also is it worth replacing them in ones so as just to replace the faulty one.

what plugs are good ones to use in the S2?

would you say that the oem coils are readily available or are they hard to come by

ta for the info Jamo. i found the coil packs at vagparts - £67.50+vat. this seems quite dear. is there an easy way to find out which if any of the coil packs is failing and just replace the one or do they need to be done in sets of 5? i guess it's worth baring in mind that all the other packs will have done 175K so all could be tired - what are your thoughts?

does the ABY engine run a distributor, distributor cap and rotor arm or is there some other arrangement?

also not sure what plugs to use was thinking maybe the standard audi ones as the engine is standard spec still

I would first of all take the cover off and check the plugs. Only replace coil packs if u sure its them as its expensive. Ive also had similar effects from Ignition amplifier.

When one of my coil packs went, i replaced the lot. No one knew a way to test them at the time and no point going into it if another pack will wail 6 weeks down the road (plus you gain lots of power so hurray).

              hope this helps

as you can probablt tell i have not had the car that long so dont know much about it. if i get new coil packs are ther easy to fit? and are there any special tools needed?

you mention the ignition amplifier - is that what will be fitted to my 95 ABY? and what symptoms do you get if this starts to fail? is it a dear part?

Will work perfectly on your ABY also.

£235 for the kit including UK shipping for the 034 coil upgrade but first I would eliminate the coils and POS and make sure it is that which is failing.
The test procedure has been posted here before.

AAN and ABY are basically the same engine, the intake manifold and water manifold are the primary difference between the two, they use the same coil packs.

As i said search for 034 coilpacks test by Corey.

one thing that was mentioned in an article about coil packs was the power output stages getting too warm and breaking down. given that i only seemed to have the hesitation problem with my car for a week and the weather has been very hot is it possible that the POS's are overheating or could it even be that the timing is being retarded as the weather is making the intake charge too warm

please let me know your thoughts

Get the car warm and make sure the misfire is happening. One at a time remove the injector plugs (working cylinders will get more lumpy when you remove an injector plug). When you have found a cylinder that doesn't get more lumpy when you remove the plug come back and tell us.
