    Hanging Revs

    Hi Guys,

I have just recently bought my 93 S2, and love it .

The only niggle I have, is when changing gear and the revs are above 2K. After pressing the clutch and lifting off the loud pedal, the revs seem to hang (and sometimes rise!) briefly.

This causes me to have to wait for the revs to drop, before shifting up, or I end up with a lumpy gear change !

Any ideas what might be causing this, or is this fairly normal?

    Cheers

Might be a sticky throttle cable/linkage...

...or, dare I say, driving style?!!

Worth trying to get off the gas a little sooner and seeing what effect it has.

Move your seat back a notch! Lol.

Lol, I did question my driving style. I got my S3 owning mate to have a go, and he did notice the revs holding after lifting off the throttle.

It might just take getting some used to!

Its not normal. Check the throttle pedal for problems with carpeting, etc. hanging it up. Then check the throttle cable for binding (may need lubrication). While you are at the throttle body, notice the throttle closing action. There is (or should be) a small dash-pot (or damper) that prevents the throttle from slamming shut. I am guessing that yours is wonky (somehow too stiff) and the time to close the throttle after you let off the pedal is longer than normal. The rise in revs is when it hasn't closed completely and you have put the clutch in, i.e. removed the load when the throttle is still slightly open.

At least that's my take. Its not normal. The truth is out there. You just have to track it down and kill it.

Yep fair points by Dave, and I would tend to agree that it is more likely that something is sticking, rather than it being your driving style waad.

I had some throttle sticking in the past and it was cured by stripping down and cleaning the throttle shaft and bearings.

I know its been a while, but finally got round to having a look at the throttle closing action! It does seem to be the throttle damper. When i let the throttle return, its does seem to be very slow when the lever reaches the damper.

Is there any adjustment on the damper?

found on mine just recently that it was the trim on the shelf under the steering wheel was fouling the pedal causing the revs to hang.
