There's also a metal gear available from Audi that fit's the 3B dizzy. It's originally for the sport quattro(?) kw engine if I remember right and it's about 80-90euros (the whole distributor costs about 300 euros here, an exchange part).
Part number for that metal gear is 034 905 247.

The reason I wanted to change the gears was to eliminate the worlds most irritating rattle, well irritating resonance at tickover.
I was in touch with a guy Derek Pulvino in the USA who I think was referred to in the Audi Driver article.
The botom line was that his bronze gear was to allow removal for shimming, the plastic ones shatter. As I had already changed the distributor (and timing chain) to try to cure the rattle this would probably not help me.
I have not tried to shim the dizzy yet but before I try a) has anyone done this and b)did it work?
