    Smoke and poor running

My 1993 ABY Coupe has broken.

We were travelling along a dual carriageway at about 60mph then all of a sudden there was a loss of power and smoke belching out of the back of the car. I got the car towed back by the AA as I didnt want to run it because the smoke really is that bad and I would get pulled straight away.

When I got it home the car is not running on the full 5 cylinders and there is a hesitation when pressing the pedal. Then when you go to the back of the car (when you find it through the cloud of whitey/grey smoke) there is a strong smell of oil.

I have checked under the bonnet and nothing seems to be leaking so it must be internal. My brother is a mechanic for Audi so I sent him a video clip of the car in the condition it is in and by the poor running and the smoke he suspects a valve has probably gone and causing the oil to foul one of the plugs but seeing as he lives 250 miles away this is only a guess from seeing the video clip.

Can anyone help me with this?

Sounds like a head gasket has gone...did you check the water to see if there is any oil in it,if you take the spark plugs out you should be able to pin-point what cylinder is playing up by the colour they are, compression test would be a good idea ,that to would pin-point what cylinder was playing up........smoke colour sounds like water oil mixture

was your turbo still showing boost when driving?

    Good Luck

I just had the same problem:
Misfire, oil everywhere, and smoke out the exhaust.

My spark plugs had come loose, and one of them shot out the top destroying the coilpack and the thread on the cylinder.
Very expensive. That's maybe worth a check.

One of my gaskets had gone, so that's where the oil was coming from.

Hope you get it sorted soon and at little cost.

        Blue or black smoke?

If black, you have probably a blown boost hose. This way turbo sucks lots and lots of air through the MAF and ECU feeds fuel accordingly.
        Try unplugging the MAF first.

eh... sorry Porkkis... are you addressing me or MAK2503?

Either way, my smoke was blue, and his was "whitey/grey smoke".

            Thanks for the advice.

I have checked the radiator bottle but there seems to me no mix of oil and water.

I tried the car without the MAF but it was still creating the same greyish coloured smoke. I noticed today that there is also a very faint knocking to the engine which was not there before.

As for the turbo it was boosting with no problems at all.

I will try and take the spark plugs out at the weekend and give it a go.

If it is a suspected head gasket then how much does it cost roughly for this to be corrected?

I had to get a load of gaskets for my job... they ranged from £5 to £30.
I don't know what labour would be involved in changing only gaskets.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Sorry but I have not had the time to fix the problem yet.
Has yours developed the same problem?

There is some smoke, but not that much. But it runs fine actually... So I will keep an eye on it...
