Enabling 'Check Engine' light in urS4 dashboard?

I found an archived web page that seems to say it's simply a case of pulling the dash pod out, locating the pre-wired connector and popping a bulb into the correct location.

Pulled my dash pod out yesterday, and located what I think is the correct wire (tie-wrapped onto the bit of the loom that goes into the back of the oil pressure/temp/clock area). However, I couldn't work out where this should plug in, nor where the correct location for the 'check engine' light is?

    Has anyone done this?

Yep I've done this. You probably won't have a specific space for the engine check light. I've put mine in the empty ASR pod next to the handbrake and ABS warning lights. Then all you do in order to read the fault codes is turn the ignition on, bridge the white and black diagnostic ports (in the relay box underneith the bonnet) with a piece of cable, hold for a few seconds and then remove. The ecu light will then turn on and proceed to flash out any stored codes! Just ignore the code for the engine speed sensor (4111 iirc) as this will always show when the engine's not running.

You can use the light pod from a 20v 200 (I have a spare if you would like it?) this has the correct CEL on it (I did exactly what you are doing on my earlier S4).
If you can find a slim fitting panel rocker type switch you can wire up the 2x2 connectors so that you can have an instant fault code reader without even having to go into the fuse box.
All you do is join a 2 pieces of wire to the front pin of each connector and wire them to the switch. You can place the switch where ever you like. I mounted mine on the upper cover of the steering coloum cowl (hence it needing to be slim).
This is only really applicable to the S4, the later S6 doesn't have the wire tucked away as I found out when I sold the S4 and bought my S6 Avant

However ECU still has that pin , only connector has empty place for contacts. I think virtually any car electric can "enable" it for you, especially if you keep things simple, and wire just LED into the corner of glove box .

P.S. However pulling codes somewhere with vag com can turn to be way cheaper
