    Camshaft alignment marks?

When at TDC with timing marks on both crankshaft and camshaft pulley lined up, should the marks on the camshaft chain sprockets also line up to eachother?
    Because mine does not..

On the RS2 i thought the camshaft sprockets should line up but the cam pulley mark will be half a tooth behind the V?

I used the mark on the back of the cam pulley since I have the camshaft cover off. Fitting it back on confirms that the mark is a bit of the V.
Here are some pictures of what it looks like now:

Do not rely on the lower mark as the holes on the cover where it mounts are usually too big and allows the cover to slop about, you cannot guarentee the correct alignment, you are alot better off using the "0" on the flywheel, it is the only way to align these.

Do search about RS2 timing. There are issues with ADU timing belt alignment.

The flywheel mark lines up when everything is placed as in my pictures.

Been reading some of the other threads on the subject and it seems the camshaft pulley on the RS2 should line up about half a tooth to the left of the V.
But shouldn't the marks on the camshaft sprockets line up at that point? As you can see, mine does not. Is it possible that one of the cams is installed incorrectly?

I have done the belt on two RS2s.

Both were as yours is. leave it as is.

The second one I did had never had a belt before, must be correct.
I had the same thoughts as you!

                  Thanks Rob!

One less thing to be concerned with when putting it back together.
But I must admit, to me these alignment marks are more confusing than helpful.

The inlet and exhaust timing is fine tbh, but you must ensure when you take up the tension on the belt that the Cam pulley doesn't move, if you can understand? You must ensure the slack is on the adjustment side.
Don't settle for the 1/2 tooth out, I had an RS2 in recently that the previous owner had had a belt done by a "Jaguar" specialist, it only took 1200Nm to undo the bottom pulley, anyway the timing was like yours a half a tooth out, set it so it was correctly aligned (as I do every belt) and the owner reported that the car now would accelerate like he imagined an RS2 would.

                    HTH's?

I tried mine in both positions..

Was better at low end rpm , not as good with a few revs, was less brutal....

I spoke to a certain "specialist" on finding my first Rs2 misaligned,
"RS should be as it was,a tooth out" I was told.
Then when i did the second one, it confermed it for me.

That's interesting as I found the opposite , I thought it more brutal aligned as the book says tbh plus the customer preffered it this way.
Strange as every other engine I have ever worked on has performed as it should the way Audi laid out the timing marks.
If you like how yours is that's cool.

I think the allingment mars are right for the S2 but not for the RS2 camshafts. isnt it?

I have been told that Audi appart from the RS2 workshop manual gave an Extra order to time the rs2 half tooth back. Thats why all of them are by Factory.

My aan is half a tooth back due to skimming the head and the block, it closes the the distance between the two pully's hence moves the cam mark back when the block is at TDC.

I had the marks lined up after a cam belt change on the Rs2 and lost boost to 0.6bars.
Then did a search on timing and moved the tooth as suggested and got me Va va voom back.
