Ive used it in the past without any problems at all after the engine had been rebuilt to help clear all the crap out.

But there's no proof to this, it's more "fear" factor.
If the engine is obviously 'coked-up' or sludgey when you look inside the oil filler cap hole into the cam(s!) area, then it may be a bad idea to use a flush to disturb it. (If there is any sludge/crap in the engine thats were it will be found).
If its all clean and a nice light straw colour like mine (and most of yours I'm betting!) then there shouldn't be a problem using a flush to keep it pristine.

I am far too worried about my S2 engine to just throw it in, but if others are happy I may give it a whirl...

Its pros and cons I guess...
Why do you want to use a flushing agent??- should only be used if the car has been abused e.g short journeys and no oil changes. It can help with noise hydraulic lifters if thats a problem

If you change your oil every 3-6000 miles there is no need- steer away and save your cash for good oil and change it more often.

Engine flush will not touch the varnish that builds up and it will dry out oil seals!!

If you do use a flush- get the engine hot, drain, use the flush and DO NOT REV THE ENGINE the turbo spins very fast at tickover!! (take the outlet hose off and put your hand over if you want to see!!)

As for slick 50, no no no no- yes it does reduce friction BUT it has no place in our engines, if the oil companys thought these aditives worked they would put them in the oil and charge you a bit more (one way to look at this is when a F1 team uses something then it may be of help to us!!) The oil filter removes most of the material and the turbo bakes the rest (remember that varnish you want to remove!!)

Acids like alloy wheel cleaner is the only thing that works on varnish/ black deposits and you need to strip the engine down for this.

Dont use slick 50 or any other additives as these stop the syncro brake bands working- crunchy gear syndrom .

I found a page for oil geeks. More info and terms than you want but if you really want to know about oil check it out.

hey, since i found this oil thread i might as well ask here. What could a drop in oil level(checked with the dipping cable) could mean when:
1)you have no smoke blue or white coming off
2)you have no smell of any oil burning
                  3)you use 10/40 oil
                  4)you have a chipped rs2 to 370hp
                  5)you have only done 2000km
6)there is only a small visible oil leak around the temperature sensor, but nothing serious.....
7)you have 2bar idle and 4.5bar revving while temperature is moving when driven semi casual up to 70degrees(i have never passed that mark by the way)
8)when stationary there is no oil leak visible on the ground or any surrounding area

Can it be that the 10/40 oil has been burned through the engine because it is not suitable for the temperatures and evaporated or could there be some other reason??

oil was changed from the previous owner as i picked the car up,the dipping cable was above the normal, and now its below the normal area...also fuel filter was changed.Temperatures here in greece on the summer often go up to 30-35degrees(if that has anything to do with it)
                  car has 132.000kms.

i hope i dont have anything expensive coming up....

                  *small update*
I went down to the garage, and took a look again. The car rests now in a very very slight slope(as our garage is not a perfect straight level),and the redaing from the dipping stick is what i could say on the last resort of the OK region.I took the bottle (1l) that i had and poured almost 2/6 i could say, definitelly less than half and the reading from the dip stick came up to the top of the OK region.Of course engine is cold.
                  Am i exaggerating here?

Owners handbook for an ABY engine (near enough the same internally apart from cams) says,

"It is normal for the engine to use a certain amount of oil: oil consumption can be up to 1.0 litre per 1000km.

The oil level must therefore be checked at regular intervals, preferably when filling the tank and before a journey"

                      Hope this helps

After reading this thread from top to bottom, I'm even more confused

I just Mihnea's judgement about running the ABY with 10w-60 BUT I want to be sure that switching from 5w-40 to 10w-60 will not damage my engine in ANY way as it runs fabulously on 5w-40 ( though I have to admit that I can't really compare ).

Anyone got a definitive answer on this one ?

I have no answer but as i see it most of us have owned our cars
for acouple of years months or even weeks we do not know the engines
life cycle .if any damage\wear has been done it cant be reversed buy using
the best oil known to man kind all we can do is prolong engine life from now on
The thing i have found with the S2 is that every rattle or wot ever makes you\us
paranoid more than any other vehicle i have owned. It is the cost of rectifiying
our precious S2s when something has gone wrong that makes us this way.
If we drove say aFord or rover of the same year we would scrap it then get another one
Whats the best oil again.................... ..

well i couldnt find my other post about buying the castrol RS 10W60 online,so i will post here.
I just received my 2 5l bottles of oil from ebay.de shop by the name MAPODO.It took around 20 days to arrive(it is normal for Greece),i payed a total of 85euro in costs and oil looks great!
I think i will never buy oil from greece again...ever!
                              cheers!

he also has a website,i think if you do search you will find him!
                              cheers

u can´t 100% check the oil when your at the gas station, only when it´s been sitting most of the night, and you drive in the morning, that´s where it will be 100% correct,
iven when the oil is hot it takes time to run back too the sump.
