i have Esso semi synth 10w40 currently but Synta to go in over the weekend.

So for best summer oil you want 10w as the lowest number and 40 or above?

      Hi
      Advice Wanted!

Just changed oil and filter with Castrol, I think 10w/40.
I have 3B coupe, high mileage. I noticed that on Tuesday last, very hot day, engine was ticking over at around 900 and pressure was 1 bar. When motoring at 2000 rpm, pressure increased to 2 bar. Oil temp was OK, not high.
Are these pressures to be expected?
      Thanks

Just a couple of things, Audi only recom. whatever oil is cheapest for them to buy! And secondly that Ians oil pressure is TOO LOW. I use Total 5W/40 Fully Synthetic oil, and on a hot day cruising down the m/way at 80mph oil temp is about 90 deg. pressure is about 4-4.5 bar. At idle in traffic on hot day it is no less than about 2-2.5bar.

I will be changing oil spec tho. Using the fully synthetic 5W/40 the car burns more oil, if i use a 10W/40 Semi-syn. then it uses less, still good oil quality, and it gets changed every 3000 miles anyway.

          Hi Guys

Currently running an RS2, which is my pride and joy. Over the last couple of weeks the oil pressure when running at normal speeds once the car has warmed up has dropped from 4.5 bar to 4 bar. It's always been steady on 4.5 previously. There are no other obvious signs of any problems and the oil level on the dipstick hasn't changed. Should I be worried? Any ideas why this is happening?

Car had an oil and filter change about 3,000 miles ago. Not sure what oil was used. But I asked the garage to use a fully synthetic oil to the spec in the handbook and said that it was currently on fully synthetic Motul Synergie 6100.

Had noticed that the oil pressure on hot idle was between 1.5 and 2 bar, when it had warmed up on this oil. Previously it had been running at 2 bar. I'd planned on getting the oil and filter changed every 5,000 miles and was going to get a different oil put in next time 'cos of the low pressure on hot idle. Should I be looking to get the oil changed sooner now the oil pressure is dropping off whilst running at normal speeds?

Hi, as it's already done 3000 miles, just drop the "whatever brand" oil that's in the engine right now, get a new filter from the dealership and change it yourself and put some nice and fresh Castrol RS 10w60 oil in it, you'll have a nice surprise and the engine will thank you!

            Cheers,

I use magnatec as that's what all previous services with Audi have used.......
pressure seems below 2 at hot idle (90+1mark) with 4.5 to 5 on longer runs....

So for tha moment I'm keeping my oil as before...

IMHO and that's just my tuppence worth, the Magnatec stuff is used by Audi because it's cheaper for them but it's in no way a really good engine oil for a turbocharged motor, the real good things for turbocharged motors are Castrol RS and Mobil 1 5w50, though the 5w is a little low....

Not sure what the oil was when I got the car but hot idle was never below 2.2 bar. I changed to VW Synta Gold and hot idle is now about 1.8 - 1.9. Even when really hot the pressure gets to 5 bar at anyhting over about 2500 rpm.

I'll be using Castrol RS next time. I'm going to demand that the Audi dealer uses it or even take my own supply. If they won't use it, they lose my custom :nana:

Why is 10w60 better than say 5w or 0w if they are too thin why is this a problem (if the car doesn't use any oil). 60 sounds very thick to me, and I have read somewhere that it makes the oil pump have to work harder when cold?

Anyway I trust your judgement Minhea

when cold the 10 number is important, and 5w is too thin, really no good for turbo motors and even worse so with 0w. the w60 number means viscosity when hot and the higher the better for good engine protection on hot surfaces such as turbo bearings and so on...

The first 2 years my garage poored in Elf Competion STI 10W40 (semi-synthetic). I luckily didn't used the car much because of all the work.
Now I use Elf Excellium LDX 5W40 (full synthetic)
                            (ACEA : A3/B3/B4-98 - API SJ/CF - Daimler-Benz : MB 229.3 -
                            VW 502.00/505.00 - BMW Longlife - Porsche

and change it regularly. Never see any oil comsumption.
                            I buy Elf because that I get a 70 % discount on Total/Elf/Fina products. I pay € 3.60 for a liter of Elf Excellium LDX 5W40 !

But I understand that the 5W40 is not the best choice? Elf has a Elf Excellium 10W-50.

                            Application :

Very high performance engine oil based upon Elf Synthetic Technology, recommended for all petrol and diesel engines. Specially designed for maximum protection with extended oil-change intervals

But not any of the VW 50x.x specifications. Only: ACEA : A3/B3-98 - API SJ/CF - RENAULT Gasoline

Total has Total Quartz Racing 10W50.
                            Application :

Synthetic multigrade oil developed to cover the most stringent requirements of both gasoline and diesel engines. Particularly suited to turbo-charged and multi-valved engines. Can be used in the most severe operating conditions (motorways, dense city traffic...), in all the seasons. Perfectly adapted to all vehicles equipped with catalysts and using unleaded fuel or LPG.

                            Also no VW specifications.
                            Only: ACEA A3/B3 - API SJ/CF - PORSCHE

I need all the funds to keep my S2 (and other things) running , so I rather keep buying my oil with the Total/Elf/Fina discount.

So, is it really needed to switch to Castrol? My oil pressures now are enough(2.0-5.0, standard engine and ecu, 150 k). Or is maybe the Total or Elf 10W50 also a good alternative?

I changed my oil & filter in January, installed Synta Gold, done about 1000 miles since then and my warm idle pressure is about 2, fast cruise it's at 4.5. I've noticed that at idle the pressure fluctuates a little.

I always used Synta Gold in the past - always use a fully synthetic oil.
I always thought that the first number was better lower (cold viscocity), and the second number better higher (warm viscocity) - but is an ultra-low one (say the 0-40s you can get) too thin for a turbo/very hot engine like the S2?

For the sake of a few quid I think I'll definitely change to Castrol RS on next oil change though, anything that improves the life of the engine is good!

Did any of you ever have an engine failure due to poor oil quality? I did. The Castrol GTX ll temp went up to some 130 celsius and the engine gave up. It was not an Audi though. But a devastating feeling it was when the VW gave up in France on a nice summer day somewhere near Orange, after having covered the whole Spain with no problem. The local VAG dealer shook his shoulder and suggested to change for a french car....cause there was no spare for a VW....
Anyway, I just can't see any contraindication to use RS, when you can afford it.
