    Turbo timers, anyone had experience?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Digital-Turbo-...QQcmdZViewItem

Seems cheap enough, is it worth getting one? Quite like the function of limiting the turbo untill the car is warmed up (I'm guessing thats what it does for the start-up ****ion?) and obviously can see the point of letting the turbo stop before the engine does and stops sending the oil around. But is it really only necessary for more high powered cars? And if it means wiring this foreign device into the loom will i have any problems?

    Cheers

Your car already has it's own OEM turbo timer of sorts. It's called the after run pump. It the temp are high enough after switching off the car, then the pump pushes water round the turbo in reverse to cool it down, so stopping a very hot turbo from cooking itself to death. Stage 1 rad fan speed may also fire up too.
I always take it easy for the last few miles before stopping, this gives the turbo time to stop spinning and a little time to cool before switching off.
This all assumes you have an after run pump that works..

Turbo timers. Hmm, more useful on older, oil cooled turbos, but even then what's wrong with letting the engine idle for a minute or 2 before switching off? Insurance companies don't like turbo timers - the idea of having an unattended car idling...

Some come with a masive premium hike, more than a 200PS upgrade, some insurance companies will simply cancel your premium...

Technically illegal parked by a public road - be careful, a car left unattended and running is an offence.

After run pump - good for water flow but no use whatsoever for oil supply. Better to go through a slow drive cool-down procedure if you've been really hammering along!

I have a turbo timer fitted, press a button on the fob and its idling for 90 seconds, works great.. insurance company said it was fine and also allowed my remote start facility too which I was surprised at..

total gimmick in my opinion as mentioned previously ease off a few miles from home and make sure the after-run pump works, keep the oil in good condition and you will be fine...put the money saved towards a brake upgrade or something really useful and sae the timer for the ricer Lancia Y10/Fiat Uno (Uno = number of panels without rust or those stupid stickers telling u what they've bought for it) Turbo's instead

Cheers guys, better to know the real info. Usually drive it slow for the last few minutes anyway. It was just so cool seeing an Evo drive up into pub carpark, the owner get out while his car was still warbbling away, and then 90s later it just dies! But hey, driving it slow for the last few minutes would be best, and besides, its done 85k of I dont know what kind of driving, any damage to the turbo might have already been done!

Haha, yeah but you can lock your car you know! Surely If someone managed to get in it and drive away it would cut out as soon as it was told to?
Nevertheless, im not going to get one anymore!

Would it be possible to have an electric pump plumbed into the oil supply so when the after run pump powers up it to powers up.?
it could be plumbed into the intake feed with a few inline check valves so the oil flows through the turbo. Might improve things a bit, or do it the cheap way and chill for the last mile or two to cool things down.

Having a turbo timer won't mean that it's any easier to steal your car..

Had one in my RX-7 as I had a job were I could be called out on emergencies and had no time cooling down the turbo. It was a nice addon I think.

You can lock the car as you always do, so why could anyone suddenly steal it?
If I realeased the handbrake, it would stop.
If I drove over 5km/h (with handbrake on) it would stop.
With no keys in, the steering wheel was locked.

When I left the car to pop into the gas station or whatever, I left the car running outside as a thief-trap. Couldn't wait for anyone to try nicking it, then realese the handbrake and it stops. Trying to start it again and realising that there is no key there. And by that time
I would be standing by the door.

Aye, probably wouldn't get stolen, but an idling engine in a locked car won't stop folk from trying. Replacing smashed windows, though probably cheap, is a real pain in the a**e...
