    Coversation with my Holset Contact

Just had a chat with my Holset contact and he is not sure if he can get me a K24 yet but has another offer in the meantime.

The guys on the shop floor (who make the turbos) have offered to check it for problems and then rebuilt it for just the cost of the parts if need be. They will also try and diagnose why it has gone at such a low milage.

They warn against chipping cars as they say that lots of unburnt fuel causes the carbon build up which in turn leads to imbalance in the shafts and knackers the bearings. I seem to remember Mr Nugent and Minhea saying something about all the current chips on offer not altering the fuelling properly and therefore running rich. So it seems that home fries may be both turbo and environmetally friendly (less fuel)!

My car has a superchip in it for 3 weeks (according to QS - last owner had it put in and then three weeks later had it put back to standard - before he sold it to me) but I can't see this causing my problem.

Interestingly they seem really keen to do this sort of stuff and have done it for loads of employees and friends. Maybe there is an opportunity brewing here for some 'specials' and 'hybrids' it seems to me that the guys at holset like to show off their skills

I'll get the turbo to them the week after next and will keep the group informed.

Leigh, the problem with most chips available out there is that they are "generic" chips that are made especially for running rich so everyone can run them, even with a clogged fuel filter.

AMD on the other hand only modify the boost chip, thus making the car run excessively rich at WOT, simply because they don't change anything in the fuel chip, and that's bad for performance (too rich mixture kills HP contrary to common belief) and possibly for turbos.

Can you ask your friend for how much he can get the following triple-K part number: 5324 988 7200 ? If he has good prices I'd like to have one!

      Thanks for letting me know,

Yes - the 'Home Fries' run a little leaner than stock (which is conservatively rather rich to be on the safe side).

AMD retain standard fuel & timing on their S2 remaps... Remember they only alter the boost profile with one chip change (and an alleged custom mapping).

Superchips hoik up the boost with the WG spring modification. I presume that if your car doesn't have a visible threaded adjuster on the WG perch that they must have used a stiffer spring for this purpose (and then removed it afterwards).

The stiffer WG spring does reduce lag and increase boost, but it also increases turbo wear & tear. Although I doubt that three weeks of use would have done anything terminal.

Superchips do modify the fuel & timing chip but I don't yet know how intelligently they do that on the S2. Their chips are in scrambler sockets so the only way to check would be to physically measure the Superchipped timing and fuel usage and compare to stock. I wouldn't be surprised if Superchips took the normal 'richer is better' attitude on the S2... but in actual fact it runs pretty rich standard on WOT and leaning it out (within limits to prevent overheating and pinking) actually generates more power and uses less fuel.

Talking of which... My MPG is averaging 25.9 after another tankful of Esso 97 RON cos I couldn't get Shell Optimax. Mixture of Motorway (prolonged stints ~4000rpm in 6th) and jams on the M4 nr Heathrow. That is still about 2.5mpg better than standard for me.

Stop talking bout these wonderful chips then paul and get production going for us all then!!! LOL

Rahh need more power! and improved fuel economy when driving sensibly! rahh i need your chip even more!!!

I drive like a grandad most of the time, only rarely "giving it some" so would be nice to have more power there but also better economy for the other 75% of the time

            Hi,

I've also noticed a gradual improvement in my fuel consumption since upgrading with the RS2 bits and Mihnea's chips. However, since my fuel pressure has been increased from 3 to 4bar, I'm not sure the readout is accurate anymore.
The fuel consumption is calculated from injector duty cycles isn't it? If that's the case mine will be out because the injector will be flowing a greater volume of fuel for each cycle.

            Steve.

              Paul

My WG has the blanking off cap missing and all you can see is a threaded hole a few mm deep.

As far as I know boost was standard (acording to rr figures the other week) so I guess it was put back properly?

Steve - What injectors are you running ?

I can't remember if Mihnea maxed out your feeble 3B ones or if you went with RS2 injectors. If its the latter then your MPG computer readings will be skewed.

Anybody running the RS2 injectors on an S2 needs the RS2 trip computer for any sort of accuracy of mileage info.

I have the original S2 injectors and the 7A Fuel pressure regulator.

                    Cheers
