    A4 ECU Problem

Just a quickie for all you Audi bods,

A mate has an A4 with an ECU Fault, his car will no longer recognise his keys

It's a 1996 1.8 5 speed manual petrol engine with bosch fuel injection system. I haven't got the engine code as the car is still at my local garage. They're not auto electrician's so they're waiting on me moving it or finding out if they can fit an ECU out of a scrapper.

The problem is that the engine fires up but doesn't maintain revs it just dies. I believe it's to do with a module on the ECU. My question is that I can get an identical ECU with no keys from a scrap yard for £100+vat. Would it be possible to re-code my keys to suit the ECU? Audi have quoted £750+Vat for a new ECU is that my only alternative or do you know of any way round it. Is it possible to manually by pass it?

It's driving me mad when the cars only worth a grand.
Anyone got any Ideas ? or can anyone help ?

    Cheers
    Dom

Does it just start and then die a few seconds later?

If so then it will be the immo control unit that has lost it's coding. This is separate to the engine ECU. It may be possible to get it recoded. There was a thread about it the other day.

If it won't recode then it will either need a control unit or a reader coil. Would need to see the fault codes to be more specific.

Agree 100% with Ben, there's a HUGE amount of posts in the A4 section of audifans about these reader coils going t**s up.
