    IC size for GT3071R

    Hello!
Is there any kind of calculations needed to know which size of intercooler to use on our engines with GT3071R .AR64 turbo with possible max 450bhp?

As everyone else, I'm a bit limited in the size of IC but so far I've found 2 IC's here in my country that should fit the bumper dimensionally w/o a hitch, only if they are good in size?

    1. OBX | UNIVERSAL, TURBO INTERCOOLER 450x300x75
    2. OBX | UNIVERSAL, TURBO INTERCOOLER 455x257x63.5

Do I really need to go for a bigger one?
like this : UNIVERSAL, TURBO INTERCOOLER 600x300x75

Hope to receive some replies fast as the road tuning comes in a hurry!

The size isn't everything. There are several different types of core available. The cheap chinese made bar and plate type has been proved excellent in terms of efficiency.
Those can be sourced very cheap at ebay and then just have the ends custom modified if necessary.
Those you listed might very well be just those. Go for the 600x300 if possible.

Guys, just a silly question but - what about using twin - intercooler setup ?
I just have another original intercooler that could be used for this purpose :mischeif: Just saw one s2 forum user with this kind of setup in typ85 chassis

I think the Pressure drop will be bigger if you are using 2 IC instead of 1 Big.

Yes, but is it really possible to use this kind of setup in our cars? 2.7T is another story, but 2.2T 20V 5pot has never had twin intercooler setup...of course Audi has 225hp TT with this kind of setup .... can someone please point on some link with 2 intercooler setup on our engines?

See the Dahlback Golf. It has 2 intercoolers but the Front of the Car is Custom made.

According to a professor what ever his name was in my turbo book, in his opinion any turbo engine below 5000cc would be better suited to twin in line intercoolers of a smaller size than one large one, as air speed is maintained.

He states intercoolers have to balance between pressure, efficiency and air speed. Only large capacity engines have the CFM to maintain air speed with a large intercooler hence two smaller intercoolers are better on lower CFM engines. He states manufactures compromise with one due to cost and generaly would only fit two on their top models or one off's. makes sense when you think of the TT.

A fan in a small room has more effect than a fan in a big room.... so why not have two small rooms...

Any how i will let you know soon.... i will be running 2.2bar via a GT30 hopefully will over come any lag that may be felt with old style turbo and 2.2bar should keep the pressure up.

I think the TT is not the Right example fro top models or one offs but i am very interested to see the outcome.
