    Engine Randomly cutting out

    Hi guys.

As most of you know I have just picked up a very nice 91 3B from Dan_b and I am chuffed to bits with it.

A couple of days ago I was driving along and put my foot down in 3rd, not for long, but lifted off and de clutched to select 4th, as I did the revs dropped down completely and the car stalled. So I brought the clutch back up and as I was moving obviously it was enough for the car to start up again.

Yesterday I was approaching a roundabout, I went to put my foot down a little in 2nd and saw a car approaching the roundabout very fast to my right, so I lifted off, de clutched again and hit the brakes, and once again the car stalled.

Dan has cleaned the MAF not long ago so I cant see it being this. Perhaps the ISV? The thing that tells me it might not be the ISV is that the idle is perfect, no hunting or poor idleing.

Just to make it clear it seems that whenever I put my foot down and lift off quickly after, shortly followed by depressing the clutch the car will stall. This does not occur when giving the car some stick.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Rob

Well I had an MOT this saturday just gone and the mechanic I use said the emissions were perfect from the exhaust, given this and the fact it is running very well, could it still be the lamda?

You'll have to excuse me and my lack of S2 knowledge in some areas, I know my way around other cars, honest!

          Odd.
Lambda was replaced last year with genuine part, fuel pump was replaced 2.5 years ago, fuel filter replaced this spring.

So perhaps a trip to the boys in banbury to find out what the problem is?

              Air leak possibly?
Mine was doing something similar when the intercooler hose was found to have a split in it.

                  Well thats an idea.

But then again I remember not long ago Dan and Newsh did the Mark H mod on the O ring and the car had the fault before and after this. It also has samco hoses on the car. I went out and had a check and they all seem pretty tight.

So I took a trip to MRC today and I believe Doug found what the problem was.

Whenever I lifted off the gas I would get what I thought was the waste gate chattering, in actual fact this was the DV on its way out and stalling the turbo. Since Doug fitted a new DV I get a much less subtle whooshing sort of a sound, the contrast is unbelievable.

More to the point however is the fact that the DV was leaking air out of the system so I was losing pressure, now I have a nice new DV the revs are rock steady and I havent been able to induce the stalling that I suffered previous to this, or for that matter get the revs lower than idle speed.

Hopefully I have killed two birds with one stone and the car hasnt decided to 'behave' for one day only!

I'll keep you all posted if the problem does re-occur.

Do you mean a MORE subtle wooshing sound?!
Has performance improved at all - i would imagine if the turbo was stalling that you should now be seeing better throttle pickup?

I'm sort of surprised and not, as when we re-hosed the car a few months ago, we did check to see that the DV was working, and it all appeared fine, but then I guess it is 15 years old so not surprised that it was on the way out.

Glad to hear it was a minor fault anyway and that you're enjoying the fruits of my labours!

                            Hey, I was tired!!

The throttle pick up is better IMO and I think its running ever so slightly smoother which is good .

Doug did seem abit suprised that the car still had the same DV 15 years later, but nevermind, it didnt cost me alot and I'm pleased it seems sorted as I still havent managed to replicate the stall/low idle.

Luckily the previous owner spent an awful lot of money on the car Dan, , so that was rather helpful as everything else is running just fine!
