    Isv

Hi - Quick numpty question! How is the ISV removed? Or more precisely is there anything to watch out for! (Ive a 3B but I think they are the same on ABY's). Looks as straightforward as removing the pipe that connects on the end to the left and another pipe that connects directly underneath, and unclip the connector. Anything to watch out for??!

I need to clean it to see if its the reason the idle is so bad from cold and the car is running as lumpy as a bag of spanners at the moment! Nightmare to drive below 2-3K.

Also it looks like I might stand some chance of finding the rear clip to the dizzy cap with the ISV out of the way. (What should be one of the simplest bits of maintenance looks a right chew on the 3B!) Want to inspect the dizzy cap also as im hoping thats the root problem to the lumpiness at low revs (as I cant see find obvious boost / vac leak and there wasnt one when the car was given the once over at the Garage meet)

Also any top tips on getting in to replace the dizzy cap welcomed too!!

    cheers

It's a piece of **** to do mate.
As you say. Just undo the two pipes and ease it out of the rubber holder.
Then I used IPA in a bowl and just washed out the business end of it and let it soak overnight.
A bit of coat hanger was used to clean all the gunk from inside it and just did that till it was clean.
It made a big difference to my cars idle

Dont put anything sharp or metallic into the valve - you will ruin it - lube with mineral oil once de gunked. Inspect the hoses VERY carefully. My last boost leak was a split in the lower hose - all looked OK - no softening of the rubber etc, but a 20mm split right on the line of the jubilee clip was restricting oomph.

I also cleaned the ISV with break cleaner and then WD-40 but it stuck again after some time.

Then I saw a light and everything was clear: I used some 10-60 oil that was left in the canister. Since then ca. 1 year ago, no probs at all.

thanks guys - still feeling me way round the S2 engine bay and there's a whole lot more in there than the 7a!! Does look pretty straightforward in the family album but wanted to check first! Will give the pipes a good inspection also!

Think my plan forward is ISV, dizzy cap, and also going to replace the PRV, flame trap & clean the oil breather pipes etc. They look really gunky. Hopefully have a happier car after that. Meanwhile check as best as possible for other splits in the vacuum hoses!

Would you recommend IPA rather than carb cleaner (what I used on the 7a) or does it not make alot of difference - think they are basically the same sort of stuff amd Ive got some carb cleaner! Will avoid WD40 this time tho!

S2dude - you ever changed the dizzy cap on yours? Cant believe what a swine of a job it looks!! Investigating if the Golf 16v rotor arm with the 10mm shaft will fit as a replacement also, which I can get from Marty at vagparts.

            cheers

Ive had a close look at my dizzy and was going to change the gear but current one seems A1 so I left it as it will not be on this engine for long :mischeif:

To gain access you need to remove the inlet manifold (or I did anyway) and then space becomes more available
