Where to start?

Hey guys,

As some of you know my car was running a "bit" lean on the rollers last sunday, any pointers on where to start to sort this out? Wheer do I need to check first to make sure that all is okay with the engine and bits before I get a remapp?
Mineha - if you are about point me in the right direction matey cos as soon as it is all cool and I know it is I will be heading in your direction......

P.S. Car has never been Vagcom'd since the engine was put in so if someone local has one and could show me how to use it I would be very greatfull (anly to borrow for an Aft off course)

Thats a question i've been meaning to ask, Azman has a cq20v like myself, is the fuel pump the same as an S2 or are they rated differently?

Think they are different but I'd need to check the old family album... If you need to upgrade then get yersel' more headroom with a Bosch 044 mosport pump. There is a dedicated thread or two on that badboy in the GP section.

@Azman - I'd be checking timing and fuel pressure first. Are the correct injectors fitted for the ECU software its running ?

Is the MAF right ?

Has it been mapped/chipped before ?

Oh a silly one to check is that manifold pressure is getting presented to the FPR - easy to check with an FP guage - as you should see ~0.5bar lower pressure at idle with the hose connected to the FPR. Just a thought !

Right to answer a few Q's

1. Fuel filter is two months old.... so that should not be a problem,
2. Injectors are off a 3B engine (WAB bought the lot as a single item) Will correct me if wrong matey.
3. ECU is Motronic 3B item with I believe a DIGICHIP in....
4. Will have to check the FPR

I take it it is still worth getting it comm'd to see if there are any other faults....
Spoke to a chap down here who tunes race engines and he suggested an Apexi fuel tuner that gets wired in after the ecu to controll the injectors Anyone used oin of these, also a better FPR that was adjustable

I agree, take it out. Put it back to standard and invest in a proppa chip. A few of the guys have used them and then removed them.

Don't shoot me, got it like that...... Trying to rectify everything so that I can get a proper remapp done. Need to. Spoken to a few place round here that do remapping (and claim to do S2's) as soon as you mention modifications they run a mile Especially when it come to the 7a cams

Ah just remembered, one bleeder said he wanted £850 to do it as he has to remove the rear driveshafts as he only has a 2wd rolling road........

I am not feeling the urge to spend lots at the moment other than on a remap as I am going to be taking the engine out in the summer next year for a rebuild of the bottom end.... ( head done last year by WAB), unless you guys think it should be done again just in case after all this pinking....

Yes. You car will probably be pinking as, IIRC the fuelling and timing on those chips is messy, and you have no working knock sensing.

I think you're best bet is to get some stock maps back in your ecu. Then proceed to fault find and fix problems, if necessary.
Only when your car is in good running order, should you proceed to get it remapped.

In the meantime I would make sure you run it on high octane fuel, to help keep the knock at bay.
