martinjs had the very same symptoms,reduced power of car from over 300bhp to what felt about 150bhp.compressor was seizing up.

Reckon the compressor, or the clutch at least, is the leading suspect now. What the heck is wrong with these replacements?! That was a genuine Denso. I do remember though that the mechanic said that the compressor was in probably the worst possible location - will suffer huge heat soak, is exposed to muck and gack and is generally a shoddy bit of Audi "design".
