  • Supertech valve to guide clearance

Just ordered supertech valves and guides from fcp.
I noticed that intake are 6.95mm stem and exhaust are 7mm

Guides for the same valves have an internal diameter of 7mm

Does anyone know what the tolerances are and what needs to be done to the guides on the exhaust side to be matched?

I notice that on audi original specifications they have 6.97mm inlet and 6.94mm exhaust

If your exhaust valves are 7mm diameter and you want 0.06 clearance you'll have to buy a 7.06mm ream.

        Very unusual.

I haven't measured them myself yet, it's what it says on the specs when ordered. Sold for i5 engine with guides of 7mm. It could be that the valves are actually thinner and made to fit 7mm guide.
Can the guides be modified to fit?

Have you accurately measured the valves or just going on the "box size"?

The guides need to be broached or honed after fitting as they distort when they are installed, therefore you can spec your guide bore diameter.
The tooling is expensive though and your machine shop will likely only have only the commonly used sizes.
So are you sure your valves are not already machined to the correct clearance?

We will check them once they arrive. I went with what's been commonly sold for our engines when heads are rebuilt. Guides and valves, which made me think these are drop in.
While the intake clearly state 6.95 thickness which makes sense for a 7mm guide, the exhaust ones state 7mm. Hopefully when we get them they will measure 6.9x to actually fit the 7mm guide

Very interesting what you will measure!

Received them today and measured them. They are 6.93mm so their website was wrong.
