Mac, in my case they leaked from the axle seal. So only way to fix was to change the pump.

Had a leak on my s2 that I couldn't find. it turned out to be the heater matrix. you can check by joining the two pipes together under the bonnet ,run it for a few days and see if it still loses coolant.
