Vibration Damper differences - V-belts and Serpentine and both

I’m trying to understand the accessory systems of the different 20v engines as I am installing one in my B4.

I have an AAN which is all serpentine. That I understand.
The issue I see coming is that the AC compressor is supposed to interfere with the stock radiator position (from a 5cyl) if I install the serpentine belt system in my B4.

I know that the 3B is all v belts and I think the same as the 7A
Then the ABY/ADU became a hybrid of the two with a serpentine belt at the Alternator but V-Belts at the PAS and the AC right?

If I were to go to the ABY setup, what other than the ABY damper would I need? I have some of the 7A brackets - including the AC bracket and the Alternator bracket. We never got ABY/ADU’s here in the US

Is there a thread out there anywhere that shows the front view of each setup and what the differences are?

    Thanks in Advance

      This is helpful thanks!

Does anyone have an ABY on a stand that can take a pic from the front to show the whole picture?
      thanks

          You're the man!

          For the sake of comparison,

here's a couple angles on the AAN - note the PAS pump pulley is not on and the alternator is not bolted on. but you get the idea:

            Hello,

Hopefully I can revive this thread a bit here, as I am carrying out the same conversion as the OP. AAN into B4

I like the clean look, lack of maintenance and easy of install of the serpentine belt set up on the AAN however, I know I am running into issues with the cooling system.
            Some things I know:
            - ABY / ADU / 3B thermostat housing does not fit with the AAN A/C bracket
            - ABY / ADU / 3B water manifold does not fit with AAN intake manifold

Taking that into consideration, would it be easier at this point just to run the AAN set up and just angle the radiator? What would be the disadvantage with doing this? Electric fans / shrouding?

Or is a partial v-belt / serpentine ABY set up the go here?

Perhaps a question for Alex Error404, I purchased your lovely water manifold. Are you aware if this fits any other intake manifold other than ABY / ADU? I'm thinking of an aftermarket solution, something along the lines of Anubis Composite, Wagner, Rohlfs Racing or a reversed s1 quattro intake. I don't want to run an ABY intake around the back of the head and next to the turbo.

What thermostat housing is used in the OP's pictures? It doesn't appear to be AAN or ABY

Thanks for any input in advance,
            Andre

I have an AAN fitted in my avant and it has the same thermostat housing as you have pictured here. This came on the car, so I can't comment as to where it was bought from. Otherwise it has ABY inlet and water manifolds fitted.

This also runs a single mass flywheel. A dual mass would set the tensioner etc very close to an aux rad or oil cooler mounted on top of the crossmember. Which is something to bear in mind.

A reverse inlet from Wagner or similar would probably be your best bet with stock ABY thermostat housing and water manifold. The AAN inlet can be made to work but it does make the radiator difficult.

Very very interesting, thank you for that information and certainly for the photos! I would love to know if there is a part number stamped onto it?

It seems that this thermostat housing could be from one of the lesser 5 cylinders, N/A etc. I can imagine there were a few different variants depending on what chassis it went in. 80, 90, typ89, typ85 coupes etc...
Also, it looks similar to some v6, v8 but not quite the same.

Obviously some more in-depth research is needed on my part.
