Volvo 7400 Installation impeller damage or balance marks

    Alright lads,

I decided today that i was going to fit the K24 7400 Volvo turbo that i bought a few years back as it's been sat in a cupboard for ages.

The turbo came of an S60 R with around 60k on it i think. There is very little play in the shaft and all seemed good until i pulled the compressor housing off to re-orientate.

This is what i found, there are no marks on the inside of the compressor housing where it could have been rubbing or possibly ingested something.

Almost every other blade looks like it's been ground away to varying degree, i don't think i damaged it taking the housing off as if i did i wouldn't expect the damage to be this shape.

Can anyone with more turbo experience than myself cast their eye over this. Do i proceed with fitment or is it time to look for another turbo?

I got the magnifying glass out and inspected closer, the missing sections appear to have broken off, perhaps that's what killed the engine originally? Oh well, that marks the end of today's progression. Where is best to get another compressor wheel and the turbo overhauled?

    Cheers lads.

When i first bought the turbo i removed the exhaust housing to take measurements and fit the correct hotside for S2 application, wish i had removed the compressor housing now, i could have had this sorted long ago and be out spinning around by now. Aargh!!

Do i just buy and fit a new compressor wheel and get the rotating assembly balanced, or go for a full rebuild? Has anyone fitted a new compressor wheel and not balanced it and had long term success?

Never had to do this before so a learning curve what can and can't be done.

        Cheers guys

There are options for the compressor wheel. An example is here:
ViVA Performance specializes in performance and maintenance car parts and accessories for Volvo, Polestar and European vehicles

Please scroll down the page to the bottom for some important information.
Seem to recall there are even videos on Youtube for such a procedure.
Guess it depends what you are trying to achieve and how much money you want to chuck at it!

Changing the compressor wheel couldn't be simpler really, infact this i think is the very same turbo. (see link below) it's just the balancing of it that i'm unsure about. As a test i'd like to try just fitting a compressor wheel to see what happens, however i have my doubts just how long it would last. Don't want my engine to start ingesting metallic particles.

You can get a good look at an undamaged comp wheel here at the moment:
              https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-CHR...cAAOSwl9RaKrbD

If you have a torque wrench that tightens that low it might be worth seing if you can get even a stock replacement wheel.
I guess if you are going to worry about it then its needs to be done correctly for peace of mind.

Yeh for sure, time to shop around now and see who offers rebuilds for the best price. I called Turbo Technics today and they said at the worst case it would be £350 for an exchange item, cheaper if it didn't need a full rebuild. Any experience with them?

Turbo technics are a good reputable place for rebuilds. I would send it to them first for a professional opinion before even bolting it on car if it was me I would just get them to rebuild it but that’s me

Yeh decision made, turbo will be getting sent to Turbo Techincs to see what they reckon. Has anyone fitted this turbo to the original airbox? Space is so tight, there's like 52mm between the compressor cover inlet flange and part of the car body behind the headlight.

have a 3" Cobra head but it's just to rigid and bulky to fit in to this space. I think i'll order another type of Cobra head that comes in a reinforced silicone material, there should be a bit more flex in this type. There's also a 2.5" Cobra Head which would be more suitable in size again but not sure if i'd manage to stretch the 2.5" ID of the Cobra head over the 2.75" compressor cover flange. Perhaps if i was to soak it in boiling water i would get enough give in the material.

Looking forward to getting this turbo up and running, should be good fun!
