My first Audi 90 quattro 20V! And my first issue with it... (Oh, no...)

I picked up my 1988 Audi 90 quattro 2.0 20V (NM) in France yesterday!

My car is not the regular 20V, but one of the 1377 ever build 2 litre versions. This car in particular has been nicely beefed up with Bilstein shock absorbers with uniballs, PU bushings, stainless steel exhaust (just the mid section), brake discs, ferodo pads and 5.1 fluid, streetlegal slicks, tripmaster & repeater for driver, intercom, fire exstinguisher etc.
All the stuff one needs for rallying, but without a rollcage and bucketseats.

The Audi handles perfectly sharp and is pretty damn fast. (for a non-turbo car)

I picked it up in a small village just close to Metz, and headed home: The Netherlands. Just for fun I took some nice twisty backroads in the Adrennes. Pure fun...

Just north of Maastricht - after about 300 kms orso - I noticed the engine would fully rev up under load anymore... Just as if it couldn't get enough fuel. But since I noticed a littled popping from the exhaust I thought it might be igntion related. From there on, I just drove easy in order to make it safe home. Which I did.

Forgot to mention that while during the testdrive of the Audi a week earlier, the revcounter worked perfectly, and yesterday it didn't indicate anything at all...

Now I want to check things, but need some advise where to look first!

    Regards,

    Ben Bergstein

Nice car to have, not ignition related but a friends CQ wouldn't rev out and it turned out to be the catalytic converter being blocked....easy enough to check. I'm assuming yours has a cat?!

The 2.0 is the 160bhp version? I have a 1989 90 quattro 20V with the 2.3L 7A engine. on the 7a's there is no catalytic convertor on the early ones.
For the ignition you might want to check ignition distributor. On the 7A it uses a plastic gear. there are aftermarket brass ones available. As your rev counter is also not working that might be related with the ignition distributor. But to be sure I you should check schematics to see where rev counter signal is being taken from

looked at the parts catalogue. you have all the same hardware as on the 2.3 units. So check the distributor gear. Are the injectors still the OEM ones on the car? It's worth putting in adaptors and new style bosch injectors. The Original ones tend to leak on these cars and hard to find or asking prices are crazy.

Here in the USA we got the 7A engine and our "go-to" reference site is here: http://20v.org

Nice car and welcome to the forum

I had a similar issue on my 7A, turned out to be the knock sensors. Also wouldn't rule out pulling the G28 speed sensor mounted in the transmission bell housing for a good cleaning and refit.

Thanks for all the replies! It's a NM with Hitachi MPI without Cat.

Ofcourse when I wanted to check this fault...the RMP guage was working as it should, and performance is good again! But I will keep your suggestions and tips regarding distributor and injector in mind.

The interior is pretty worn, so I looking for complete replecement... I'll leave the paintjob to a professional. After fixing some minor things I'll have a sweet car I think.

Which partnumber do those improved injectors have? And what partnumber have the correct adapters?
