    Cannot connect vagcom

Got a mate to plug vagcom in this evening and we tried everything we could but couldn't connect to the engine module. The ABS worked ok, but not the engine dammit. After doing a scan of all available modules, we got the following message:

    Address 01: Engine
    Protocol: KW1281
    Controller: ÿÿ ÿÿÿ ÿÿÿ ÿÿÿ
    Component: ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
    Coding: ÿÿÿÿ1
    Note: Excessive Comm Errors

    Address 03: ABS Brakes
    Protocol: KW1281
    Controller: 4A0 907 379
    Component: Bremsen-Elektronik
    Coding: 0265103050
    Shop #: BB 37175

Any ideas? Could my ECU be fubared?

Is your mates lead a K-L line model? You need an interface with a L line to wake up the engine ECU.

The ABS doesn't use the L line for a wake up signal so will work with any lead.

If it is an L-line interface then you would need to check fuses etc to make sure there is power going to the right places.

He's actually got the proper Ross-Tech OBD2 interface with an eBay 2x2 adapter (has connectors for both power, and the K+L lines). Seems to work ok on his OBD1 Mk3 Golf.

Are any wiring diagrams available to help me trace the fault? Not sure which wires/fuses I should be looking at!

Ebay 2x2 adapter, i think there's your problem.

They dont work correctly with the S2 you'll find the forum littered with post of the same problem regarding leads bought from ebay.

Your better buying an original one from Ross-Tech

I thought all the problems were with the eBay interfaces themselves. The lead in question here just converts his official vag-com 16 (or however many...) pin connector to the 2x2 type.

No. The ebay adapter part is probably the cause of the problem!
ABS line is obviously ok but the other line from the converter is faulty.
Rosstech is where you need to buy the adapter from and it will work for sure
Doesnt sound like your ECU is the problem.

What do you mean by blocked K/L line?
