  • MAF connector crimping tool

    Alright gents.

The time has come to repin my MAF connector. Pin 3" Voltage out" has snapped due to a frayed wire so may as well redo them all.

Can someone recommend the right crimping tool to do this job. The one i have is a rubbish halfords type and not really suitable.

    Thanks
    Gordon

You want to search for a QUALITY crimper tool that does 'junior power timer' aka JPT terminals. Don't buy the cheapest one - get a nice one with ratchet action and make sure it caters for 0.5sqmm to 2.5sqmm

How about JPT terminals - do you know what you are looking for ?

The alternative to crimping (and what Audi technicians are allegedly supposed to do is fit replacement wires, pre-crimped on natty yellow cables, which are just spliced onto the end of the broken cable).
You can only source replacement wires from Audi (TPS) - there is hundreds of different types and they are stupid expensive for what they are. Sourcing your own JPT terminals is a lot cheaper if you are doing this kind of work. For say 40 quid on a good JPT tool, that would get you maybe 10 replacement wires from TPS at 4 quid each - thats 20 pins.

These guys have a basic selection of pins - https://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product/680 - and I think the Durite tool is available from them as well.

See if you can track down a JPT catalogue from AMP (now TYCO) - I had one in the past certainly - archived on a drive somewhere :-(

Good day. Sourcing the cables pre-crimped is something i never considered actually. But yeh, quite pricey for what they are. Error 404 supplied me with the correct JPT pins some time ago, however a thought has just crossed my. Will all the JPT pins be the same size? as Pin 3 on the MAF connector is a smaller wire compared to the others.

Wiring is not my fortre, so best be sure i know exactly what i'm doing before i go ahead and start snipping off the old pins!

There's a second hand Durite 0-703-52 for sale on ebay the now so i'll see if can get that a reasonable price. I'd prefer to have the tool for future reference than purchase pre-crimped wires. Can never have enough tools!!

From memory there is only two JPT pin sizes - one for 0.5 or 1.0 sqmm cable and a bigger one for 1.5 - 2.5 sqmm

I've got the Durite tool and it's dead easy to use, buy the pins in bulk and practice on some spare wire before you go near the car

Just be careful with ebay JPT terminals - in fact most ebay terminals in general - despite their claims most of them are not genuine (Far East *****) and don't actually fit the connector housings correctly - either won't go in or pull out.

The pack off 50 ebay ones look too good to be true, for £6 they would be good for practising with if they didn't fit the connector.

Error404, the ones you supplied have a coating on the contact surface do they not? I'm too lazy to go out to the garage to check! Do they all come with that coating?

I tried a £20 offer yesterday on that second hand one knowing if he said no i'd rather buy new for not much more.
He declined so new it was.

I'm following this Alex so where would you recommend to buy these terminals?

Yes the correct MAF terminals are gold plated.
Mark I can supply these for £11 a set (6) inc UK delivery.
Kit Includes a spare one in-case you ******** one up, although to be honest using the correct tool you have to be pretty ham fisted to **** it up.
Incidentally these same terminals are also used on the TPS
