1.8t coil pack conversion failure data

For those that converted to their ABY to 1.8t coil packs, either following my DIY info or through Corey and 034motorsports, have you had any coil pack failures? If so, what was the part number, e.g 06B 905 115J, and build date (week/year , e.g. 21/03) on the last line of the coil pack part number (on the "nose" of the coil pack).

I am compiling failure data. It appears that "J" coils fail more often than "L" coils (the ones I recommended) but "R" is even better. I have data from one guy who found the "R" coils ran 30 to 40 deg. F (about 17 to 22 deg C) cooler than the "J" or "L" coils.

Just curious. Personally, I have had one "L" coil fail since Sept. 2005. Otherwise, all is good. (I have an RS2'd 93 AAN S4 with MRC software making 288 whp (about 350 crank hp)).

All kits from me have been "L" but most have been "R", todate the only failiure we have experienced has been the one when I fitted the coil pack cover, no known failiures since then.
We haven't had any customer's come back either.
Although we have had a recent high load missfire with an MTM stage1 chipped S6 but we are checking everything else out to eliminate the possible cause.

Speaking of 1.8t coil conversions, does anyone think that the 1.8t coils give a greater spark at the plug then the oem coils????

good stock coilpacks will still produce a decent spark at 2.5bar. 1.8t coilpacks tend to misfire above 2 bar.

Is it still not recommended that the coil pack cover is fitted even with the "R" coil pack conversion?

And is "R" the very latest coil?

as far as i know the "R" is up to date. You are right its not recomended to fit the cover!

just to add, Corey supplied my 1.8 coil kit and apart from a delay in receiving the kit everything was excellent. instalation time was 12 minutes. ive completed 450 miles with no prblems. as recomended i have not installed the cover and dont intend to!
overall a highly recomended kit of great quality!

I run 2.2 bar and have for a year now, 9k miles. No misfires yet. And they were ECP coils, not genuine ones too!!

                      So it should work then..
and the dwell time problems arent a big problem i guess ?
Im currently running a custom remap in my car.

I think Doug from MRC emailed me once on a dwell question and the way I understood it, they don't make any special allowances for 1.8t coil packs versus the OE system, i.e. they consider the dwell to be the same for both.

If I am wrong, I hope Doug or Mihnea will correct me.

IIRC, mihnea could alter the dwell timings on the coils as per normal.

Would it be possible to aquire another coil pack cover, then ventilate it on a milling machine, for example like this below. From what i gather the 1.8 T Coilpacks will fit with or without the cover in place, so the cover is merely cosmetic. Another possibility would be some small fans like found on a PC graphics card to create a continuous draught, cant remember if there is space, and it must be possible to get 12V variants, put on a timer so that they run for 20 mins after shut down if the engine temp is over 80 degrees, that might work.
