  • Rod bearing damage Please Help

    Hello Guys,

Looking for some opinions on rod bearing wear. Rod number 3 has spun and the surface of the crank is rough.
Have checked all mains and they are like new.
Didint lose any fluids. oil and water levels/temp were good just heard knocking and then noticed low oil pressure?
I have the block all stripped down and wonder what is best to do? Am looking to save as much as possible and keep engine original if I can.

Any advice or suggestions much appreciated.

Damaged crank on the right and other rod shells have black areas.

Never good to see - was this a rebuilt engine? Shells tend to spin when there is not enough crush - i.e. big end bore is not sized correctly - too large.

No not rebuilt, original engine with around 130000miles. Ran well with regular oil changes. Alot of start/stops and running up to temp when fitted to track car for testing then about 50miles driving and knocking started.

What sort of power are you running?

Engine was running 340hp for years in other car.
Refitted engine to track car with EFR turbo running 310hp and 1bar of boost for start.

          Oil level was ok
          Plug all good colour
Bores dont look washed out from unburn fuel maybe diluting oil?

Now you know what your crankshaft and bearings are made out of

The shells look squashed - are they? What about the ECU - are you on Motronic? Did you map the car after you changed the turbo? I’m thinking knock damage, hammered the bearings out making them loose in the big end allowing them to spin. Which cylinders spun?

It was number 3 that spun. Had car mapped on rolling road with VEMS.
What your saying makes alot of sense as engine was perfect in other car then changed turbo and ecu and it died within a hundred miles after tune.

Have you pulled the head? Any sign of knock damage on the pistons / combustion chamber? Out of interest, who do you use for oil analysis?

No sign of damage on pistons or cylinders.
Valves were a bit oily on cylinder 3.
Used the oil lab for oil analysis. http://www.theoillab.co.uk/
Delivered the block to a engineering company today to have then look at it and quote for repair.

Maybe it’s the light but there looks like some pitting / erosion on the squish pad on cyl 3 & 5?

Mr Muscle oven cleaner is great for removing carbon, just don’t leave it on too long or it will etch the aluminium.
