How to set and test timing on 1990 S2 please

    hi guys.
back here again.I hope somene can help me here plse! :bow

I need to know please how to test that the timing for distributor and crank pulley is ok becaus the car does not run well and we have tried all other possibles. No boost leaks on this car.
Do I haf to remove inlet to check dizzy timing? Is there any guides to checking timing on these cars? and do I haf to remove all front end like bumper and intercoler to see timing marks on pulleys?

    please help here.

    I assume you have 3b engined S2:

No need to remove intake manifold. I suggest you check timing marks on the flywheel thru the window in the gearbox. Also check cam timing (you need to take off valve cover for that).

For distributor timing marks check this page (scroll down a bit to the 3b stuff).

If the distributor timing is off, then the engine will not run at all. You'll have to search the problem somewhere else. Have someone read the faultcodes for a first diagnose.

Hey. Thanku for all infos guys.
Jeffer. I am grateful for this infomation as I did not know this. I thouht car would run badly only if dizzy was out a bit. didnt know it would no start!

Problems of the car are that it is too slow compared to other standrd cars! Boost is fine and 1 bar all time nearly (stock 3b) leak test done and was ok.

Engine runs smooth and ok but ..what is right word?? car feels "flat" and does not haf the speed it should?

a tuner near here say to check timing>? how can I put to tdc on cyl 1 plse? and doi spin engine wit the crankbolt?? thankyu

Are you sure it's not a leak? Have you checked the diverter valve?

Or that the WGFV (N75) is working - is it connected up - is the fuse in tact ? Run an output test from VAGCOM (or similar) to verify that N75 is responding to commands from ECU ?

thanku for input. We think ther is no boost leak because boost seems ok?
boost is fine on defi gauge and reads to 1bar full accel till near top of revs and then lowers small amount.shall we test further for this?
Diverter vavle. This was replaced with new Audi part after reading all infos on this grate forum

All plumbing and hoses we check the other day.wgfv is plumbed correctly and was replaced by last owner (have bill)
Would not this cause low boost to wg value?
The vehicl seems to boost ok but it seems too slow for stock S2?!!
How can i test the vagcom with no portable computer (i forget word im afraid)

                thanku guys

Looks like you might have the same problem as I have, but mine kicks in at 4000. Turbo boosts to over 1 bar, but nothing really happens. Do you also get a "kick" @ 4000+ RPM or is it dead all the way to the top of the RPM range?

it sounds like you need a Mihnea remap. A new bigger turbo will for sure require a remap. Not sure why the tuner told you it would be ok...
Try calling MRC...you would need to send your ecu to them and mods list...but it may well transform your car.

Guys - no disrespect Mihnea & Co - the boy is a legend... I know... BUT 'remaps' do not fix faulty cars by magic.

The camshaft timing could be off, or have some electrical fault or even an internal ECU problem.

Agree totally Paul. But it was this that got me thinking it might need remapping

                        Thread Link

edit// just seen he appears to have called them and they said no remap needed? or did you call Jonus, Villhelm?
