Is this Intercooler a waste of cash ??

    Hi Guys
I am getting together my new project parts (all to be reviled at a later date) RS2 intercooler will be to small as going well over 350bhp
I have come across this on the bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Inter...spagenameZWD2V

They have told me they will supply a fitting kit do I can attach it to the standard crossmember (may need to grind off the old brackets ) + they can also supply a 2.5 inch universal piping .

any body had any dealings or what you think (don't be cruel)

ps I may need to trim a little off the inside of the bumper but just a little

    Hi Matt,

Why not get yourself one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Large-Intercoo...QQcmdZViewItem

A few people on the forum run these intercoolers, myself included. Fits behind the bumper ok with a custom support bracket. See the thread here :http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...ht=intercooler

    HTH,

    Cheers,
    Cheers,

    Chris

So, I have been told by my mechanic (who owns a UR) that you can increase power simply by having a larger IC.

Is this true? If so what sort of gains can you see? Would the car need remapping to achieve gains?

I am just curious for future reference!

Yes it is true, the larger intercooler has a bigger surface area allowing more air to be cooled and improving volumetric efficency. I doubt a remap would be needed but it can only be a good thing but maybe make it worth while and do it along with other mods like exhaust, 7A cam etc etc to get the best benefit.

does using 7A cams instead of RS2 cams improve things without remmaping? How come are they better?

Big Matt - core does not look good, as it seems to be tube&fin type, and even for such the fins inside the tubes look coarse.

Get the BAP type core, like Chris recommended.

Colder and therefore denser and therefore 'more' air at the same pressure *ALWAYS* produces more power !

i bought one of these off the same company, they are well made, bar and fin IIRC quick delevery as well, as paul stated, colder air = more power!

my question is about this intercooler business...how much bigger than the original RS2 intercooler is it possible to fit, without resulting into pressure drop or lag increase?
I mean i have the RS2 on the mtm chip, and i would like to replace the intercooler with a bigger one,but also i have no imminent plans to get the car into larger power volumes at the moment, however i would like to be able to make future improvements (by improvements im only concidering a 400-450hp no more)without changing again to a bigger intercooler...am i asking for too much?

So how easily can one of these be shoe-horned behind the bumper of a 3B WITH Aircon without any modification of the bumper or anything else?

What pipe work is needed and how expensive is it?

Right if I am following this properly,

The larger surface area = better cooling = more power,

So If I changed the stock one to one of dimensions 24" by 6.35" by 3.25" would this e better than stock 3B one?

azman, the intercooler has to match your setup really. There is always going to be a point where a larger intercooler will reduce the overall performance because the pressure drop may get too large across the IC and the cooling doesnt improve that much.

I wouldn't go for a truck size intercooler especially on a standard turbo. But the intercooler you mention would probably be a good compromise and be an improvement, although it will probably have a slightly higher pressure drop across it

Cool cheers for that greg. I would have thought that the pressure drop would not be that great and the quoted figures is 0.3-0.5ps1 at 15psi so not that bad really.

Well ebay here we come, reason for this is this is the only cooler I have found with the inlet and outlet pointing back into the car making it easier to bring it to the manifold and the inlet is perfectly inline with the turbo
