  • Electric fan install on my 1993 S4

I had posted this in one of the Facebook groups but thought I’d share it here as well.
I replaced the viscous fan with a Spal medium profile electric fan. I also used an adjustable fan controller from Mishimoto to set when the fan comes on. With my 80° thermostat and low temp fan switch, now my car runs as cool as can be-even with the a/c on, in traffic, on hot and humid days.

This is the 16” Spal fan, part number 30101516. It pulls 1,604 cfm’s.

I purchased another original fan shroud to mount the Spal fan into, using Spal mounts and some hardware for an oem look.

I also used an Audi connector I had laying around to make servicing/removal easier and to give it more of an oem look.

Here is the wiring harness and some loom to make the wiring work look neat.

I used an alloy flange from 42 Draft designs to go between the lower radiator hose and the radiator to house the temperature sensor.

    The parts for the installation.

    Beginning to cover the wires.

    And the work begins.

Last look at the old fan.

Terminal 15 power from the bus bar behind the knee bar.

Up through the e-box with a rubber grommet to keep moisture out.

    Wire covered.

    Bumper removed for better access.

The fan’s threads were seized so I ended up cutting the fan off.

And then applied some paint. I did have to make a second cut for better clearance once the fan was in place. If I had went with the low profile fan instead of the medium profile fan, I don’t think I would’ve needed to make a 2nd cut.

    Spal fan in place.

    Old parts.

    Flange with temperature sensor fitted.

This fan controller has an extra wire that will override the temperature sensor when the a/c is turned on. I ran that wire to the condenser fan’s resistor block to E1 to get battery voltage when the a/c is switched on.

Routing and looming the wiring up to the controller.

    Fuse and controller.

    And reassembly.

In traffic with the a/c on, high heat and humidity.

I have some videos of operation, just not sure if I can upload them here.

    Thanks for viewing.
