    Noisy tappet

Just been for a drive and when my car warms up and i am goin slow or stopped i can hear a ticking noise from engine i think it may be a tappet when i put my ear to the rocker cover it gets louder so think thats where its coming from

I have synta silver in it at the mo dunno wot people think bout this stuff its been in there for nearly 3000miles so might change soon

my cars done 136000 do u think it would be ok 2 run a flush through it just 2 see if it stops the ticking dunno wot oil to put in it after tho it doesnt seem to lose ne oil when its running on the synta as b4 it had so mobil stuff it burnt quite alot

Does ne 1 have ne tappets laying around that i could strip and clean or even if ne1 has some new 1s

Seems like a really daft question, but did you check the oil is well topped up?

I only ask, as I had a sudden noisey tappet from nowhere start ticking away in town last week. Oil had been checked recently so I didn't consider it. When I did, it was just below the min line feeling rather daft, I topped it to the max line it dissapeared.

I've heard some say the tappets get noisey if it's only half way toward the min line, so could be worth topping up even if it's OK. I'm gonna replace the oil with Silkolene 10W-50 next week, always worked well on the Coupe and rarely needed a topping up.

    Cheers

Yup, same here. I have a noisy tappet when my oil is still 1/2 way between min and max....in fact that is what reminds me to fill her up

Also, what's your oil pressure when you driving at about 3000 rpm, should be 4.5 bar ish, any less and there will be a blockage, check the oil pick up. I had this on mine, oil pressure in tickover was fine but when driving it was 3.5 bar.

I had a sticky tappet on my Mondeo which is a common problem. the car need a service and so it was reccomended that i use an engine flush. I used Wynns engine flush, the car is warmed up and then the additive is poured in, the engine run ata fast tickover, after 5 minutes the engine was much quieter. I drained the oil, replaced the filter and filled with the correct oil.

The hydraulic tappet may be 'gunged'up and so need freeing. I would reccomend this if your engine is in good condition. If it is suspect then don't use it.
