Two weeks in,first big spend !!!!!!!!

After buying my S2 two weeks ago i have finaly had time to read the large pile of invoices and put the service record jigsaw together, everything seemed to fit nicely into place and then the bombshell exploded, the CAMBELT hasn`t been done
After ringing the main dealer to get a quote £299,plus another £80 - £100 if the damper needs replacing i rang a local garage which does vw/audi work and has done quite a bit of work on the 16v coupe i have(for sale on piston heads.com),he has quoted me £150 plus parts (cambelt only),with a service aswell he quoted around £300.
He said just the cambelt would take 4 hours does this seem right or as i think excessive,as he charges for labour by the hour i dont want to get stung
I need to get this sorted asap as i have grounded my S2 as its never had the cambelt done and the milage is 135,000.

Any help is much appreciated,i live in preston lancs.

I think there is a fair amount of work on the I5 Cambelt so I would not be surprised by that figure. I paid well over £300 for a cambelt and tensioner at The Autopool in Iver and that was at £40ish an hour.

    Sound okay to me.

[suckeggs]Get it done ASAP if you are any doubt.[/suckeggs]

    Cheers,

    Steve.

Also worth buying the RS2 waterpump instead of stock S2 item

Funny that, but my recent purchase of an S2 revealed exactly the same on a 12 year old car - NO CAMBELT CHANGE!!! but luckily I spotted it before I bought the car and negotiated a suitable reduction in the price.

Get the job done by a reputable independent specialist who knows these cars. It would be mad just to replace the cambelt. Change the other belts, and you also need all the ancillaries (damper, relayroller, pulley, etc), and make sure you get the other maintenance bits done (eg water pump, thermostat) and checked (eg diverter valve) while the front is off.

As said above, it's worth getting the RS2 waterpump (and RS2 cambelt) for the few extra £'s.

It's a good half a day's work and you should expect to pay around £550 for all the parts, labour (at a sensible rate), and VAT.

Looking through the invoices its allready had the hall sender and also a new water pump at 102.000 miles,so i cant think why the cambelt wasn`t done at the same time, as the last owner was ontop of everything else that needed doing.

I got the belt done at 97k and i am now on 168k and thinking about doing it again. When i first bought the car i took it to Audi to service and the bill for a full service, all the belts and bits was £1190.34. Needless to say I now do as much as i can myself now with only the more complex jobs going to the garage.

Can anyone give me an idea how much for a engine refurb as a guideline?

We have just sold our Audi coupe 16v today,so we have some cash to get on with keeping the car in tip top condition,we have decided to book her (the new s2,we havent got a name yet) into the garage tomorrow for the cam belt and bits plus a sevice and then we will see were to go from there ,probably a brakes up-grade first!

Sorry, missed that point. Saves on extra cost in that case.

I might be a bit late with this one, and you may consider it an unnecessary expense, but based on my own experience, I would have had the Hall sender replaced whilst the cambelt was being changed, as it looks like a real pig to do after the event (and you should only be looking at the cost of the part to do it in conjunction with the cambelt service).

                              That is a good idea.

Changing the hall sensor is actually not that bad, did it in a couple of hours with my mates.

Hardest thing wass finding a large enough adjustable spanner to lock onto a cam lobe.
