How did I miss this one lol... did you even have to say 'please'?

Project 400 has officially been retired

However, through a vast number of donor parts, it must be said that many forum cars will be able to live on that little bit longer (and a little modded Fatty ) AND... there's enough left over to start a new project :mischeif:

I'm sure I'll be starting a new thread soon. I slaved my **** off cleaning + waxing the Avant for its first photo-shoot, and then the new fog light didn't arrive As soon as i get a few good pics I'll be presenting to you...

    Project 450: Avant

          I'll stick this here!
It appears that Audi changed quite a lot of things on the later models! Without turning this into a diesel spotters guide, I thought I would alert potential stroker converts about at least one major block difference between the 100 Tdi and the later A6 models.
The earlier 100 Tdi had the ign timing sensor in the usual 5 cylinder place at the rear of the block and to the right looking from the front. This is because the flywheel had five slots cut into it for reference.
On the later models this was omitted and the timing sensor was put into the block on the right looking from the front. This is because the crankshaft now had a reluctor ring on the last crank web which was used for the timing reference. So this block is not machined for the timing sensor block.
So for minimum fuss it would be easier to use the earlier block. On the other hand, if you were running an aftermarket ecu, the internal reluctor might be useful.
The engine I looked at is a late 95 AAT from an A6.
Hope that saves somebody some headaches!

Heheh - no sweat Des... I ain't shaved in a week mate !

Got more going on at work than I have resources to deal with and a stressful house move about to fall apart round me so cars are the least of my worries. Hopefully *it* is still there and we can get a scoot down to see it, then tear it to pieces at leisure.

With a bit of luck, I'll have a proper garage soon to build up this dang engine - but its all in the lap of the gods right now...

I paid much more than £55 from a reputable Audi breakers...please find me an AAT for comparison. I would rather keep it than sell it that cheap
A full running AAT engine was quoted at £700 from two seperate breakers.
S2_central...Thats a very cheap AAT then. Id buy it immediately

Below should be a pic of the later style block. As you can see, the timing sensor has been moved from the flange into the block itself. Hope that helps!

I would rather keep it than sell it for less than that, if there only worth £70, you find me one for that. Without having to break a complete car and engine to get it.

IUf the block is like this then the solution is either to make a new braket for the sensors or to use another sensor or there is no solution (for motronic users)?

Well the solution would be to use the original engine block as a template and get the flange machined to suit the original motronic sensor block. Also you would need to blank off the other hole in the block. Not a problem if you have the machining capacity, but if not will obviously add to the costs.
We know from Pisobiker's conversion that the earlier blocks from the 100 tdi and early A6 already have the flange machined in the correct place for the motronic sensor block, so it would be less trouble to seek one of those out.
As a footnote it looks as though Audi built these later engines down to a price rather than to a standard. There are a lot of inferior components. It is also the first diesel block I have seen that has visible bore bore with a noticable wear ridge. This is not necessarily a problem if you intend to rebore.

Problem is i allready have a Diesel block and crank but did not had the time to check where the sensor sits. Where are these engines inferior?
