    Golf 1.8 GTi 8v help

A friend of mine has just acquired a Golf 1.8 GTi 8v, and he is flummoxed by two things - I'm not sure either so I'll ask the good people here who might know!

First up - this breather pipe thing - what does it do, should it be plumbed to something or just open, or plugged?

And second - this appears to be a sensor, maybe a temp sensor, above the manifold, but it is in mid air and not connected to anything - any ideas?

    Any info appreciated!

The hole in the fuel distributor (top picture) is the port for the mixture adjustment....which if you were going to mess with it would require a very long 3mm allen.

The bottom picture I'm not sure of. It looks like the temp switch used on the urq to switch on the injector cooling fan. I don't remember this on my US GTI...sorry.

If it's Digi then it looks like the temp sender but picture above looks like a K-Jet engine?

Lol I ain't touching it!!!! And yes I agree it is dirty.

It is also definitely a K-Jet, for sure. My only possible interpretation of that sensor was that it might be for cold start/running? I think it looks like a temp sensor and it is in close proximity to (but not actually touching) the intake. Seems strange?

Anyway thanks for the info so far, if anyone can enlighten me as to what that sensor is for, I'd be grateful. Cheers!

It looks like the rad fan run on switch. They were only used on cars with factory towbars though according to the family album. Has it had a new engine? or head?

The reason I ask is that those sensors appear quite often on Passat engines of a simlar vintage adn the bits are interchangable.

                  Interesting!

Can't answer if anything has been swapped in, might have to grill the new owner about it.

As far as I can tell the connector is broken and therefore the sensor is rendered useless. If it's only for towing options then it won't make much difference, assuming the regular switch works.

                  Thanks for that Ben!
