Has this happened to anyone else....?

So i disassembled my old engine today, and found that the plastic splashguard that sits beneath the oilcap in the head had came apart.

I looked closer around the springs and found plastic parts down there, when i removed the oil pan, and got into the crankcase, i got a real nice surprise...!

this could help explain some of the weird running issues i had with the car prior to disassembly.

This is a pretty common issue, and why alot of people remove it.

Really? Bit concerned as we’ve got two nearly 28 years old 20vT’s that both have their splash guard in place and functional. Thoughts from the senior ashtrays?

Removed my splash guard years ago because of precisely this worry, it's not really needed

What rikki said removed years ago as this happens to most vag cars oil just makes the plastic crumble after time and breaks up and it ends up on the bottom of the sump which your oil pickup pipe will suck up and cause a oil issue I think 1.8t was one of worst to have this happen to there engines which was regular preventative maintenance to change the pickup pipe.
