Head gasket failure @ only 145k!

Can you beleive it, after only a few weeks at 1.5 bar boost the bloody h/gasket let go yesterday on my way home from work. Just what i wanted at 6:30pm. Anyway got it back to my garage and took it apart to find that the gasket had blown on cyl. 3 into the water way. Pics to follow shortly. Head needs skimming. VAG parts to the rescue, phoned Martyn at gone 8pm and ordered the bits!! RS2 h/gasket and all sorts of other bits. Various gaskets and breather hoses etc. May not be at combe tho.!!!!!!

Latest arrival for the parts is friday 25th! Will have to work like fuc* thro the night for Sat. morning

Scared the hell out of me, happened as overtaking at about 110-120mph. White smoke like never seen before

Hopefully will be at combe, might not be the s2

Tom, I'm really sorry for you dude, but if I had known your headgasket was still original, I'd have made a special chip keeping boost down low for your 3B!!!!! A paper/cardboard headgasket on a 3B can't live very long with more than 300 HP and you were the one who proved it one more time!

      Cheers,

No worries m8. RS2 gasket etc on its way. It has been going for a while as the compression area in the cyl. head is all clean! May be part of my running prob?

Huh, you bet it might be part of your problem, m8!!!!

And for me it's very obvious that even an RS2 turbo would better be installed with the RS2 headgasket, nevermind that huge K26/27 of yours!!! So as Paul told me you had the RS2 bearings and some other stuff, I thought you knew about the headgasket as well and that it was THE right one too.... oh well...

I did know about the head gakset having to be changed for a metal one, i just couldn't be arsed with all that work. I hate working on my own car after working all day on other people's. Too late now, its my fault for not doing it when i was told to

How much for a metal gasket or is this just standard on a RS2,and if not who would stock them.Just it would be nice to know for future reference.

Rob, the RS2 head gasket is the metal gasket. Audi is only supplying that one for 20v turbo engines right now, the old paper gasket isn't available anymore, which is cool

I seem to recall the metallised head gasket is standard on the ABY and late AANs as well as the ADU (RS2).

Yup, it is, but only from the model years the RS2 was built -on I think. i.e. an ABY from 93 IMHO has a paper gasket and so do the AANs. But that has also to do with the ignition system, on the last RS2-ed AAN I've tuned, it has the paper gasket and 250.000 km and even with 1.9 Bar overboost the head gasket is still a head gasket. IMHO the problem here was: the 3B ignition system, the head gasket itself and the hybrid with a K27 cold side pushing 1.5 Bar...

Just had to replace a leaking cam cover gasket and a camshaft oil seal.

BTW I've read somewhere that s4 or s6 gasket(5 cylinder) is much stronger than rs2. And they've recomended these gasket.

@Sweeper: that's total ********, the S4/S6 head gasket is the exact same as the RS2 and there's no stronger HG than the S4/S6/RS2!
