These ecus are easily recoverable with ft232rl kkl or galletto cable.

    Bricking it, nice pun

I was the same initially, but after 20+ successful reflashes I’m pretty comfortable with the process now.

To be honest I was bricking it while I updated the ECU. I know a replacement ECU would only be about £70 but then there would be the immobiliser to sort out, and most likely the car would be off the road for a week or two, could be longer depending on the post at this time of year. Would also most likely need a new cable & vagtacho to get the immobiliser pin code, it would have just been a massive pain in the backside.

Yes, very well done. You do realise that this success automatically promotes you to head Forum software expert?

Made a backup of the current ECU, then flashed the stock MAP that I was given. Thankfully everything went well and the ECU is now back to a stock map and the car is crackle free.

Took the car out for a quick drive afterwards and it felt so much better, with the old map it had a slight hesitation with the revs at about 4K rpm, that's now gone and the car running so much better, and no silly pops when decelerating. It also feels no slower with the standard map on the car. Think that map could have either been a crackle map only or it was just a load of rubbish with added crackles! Either way it will never be put back on the car. Should be a little more economical as well as I'm not chucking fuel in the engine to get some silly noises, and my cats are not going to get destroyed.
    Brilliant result well done

I've ordered a cable to apply the stock map. So will see how that goes. I guess it's either going to work or not.

If you want to save yourself the hassle speak to Chris at tuning technics, cheap and a fast turnaround,he could flash it back to stock or anywhere inbetween.
He quoted me £60 to flash my tfsi to stage 2+
If I sent him my ECU.
    HTH Cheers,Adam

I swapped maps a few times on my B5 RS4 its pretty easy, the cheap software can be a bit hard to understand but just take your time and follow the instructions. Make sure the battery in the car is fully charged, you don't want the voltage dropping half way through writing to the ECU.

That's a good point Lee, the Cat's will hate it.

It shouldn't really hurt anything if it's just un-burnt fuel igniting in the exhaust... Which is how I'd imagine they've done this, still I'd want gone as well and it certainly won't extend the life of anything or make the car any quicker, in fact it'll make it run worse as the ECU will be rapidly trying compensate for an over rich mixture every-time you back off the throttle and it can only correct things so much.

Compressor stall does actually sound quite different, more of a chattering noise and that will damage the blades on a comp wheel over time.

Hi Kit, Yes another name is pops & bangs map. It's doing my head in. How anyone could drive around with a car sounding like that all the time is beyond belief.

Anyway I have 4 diagnostic cables KKL VAG-COM Lite, HEX-V2, VCP (CAN-BUS) and ODIS. Not one of them works with the nefmofo software
