Can anyone explain why the AAN has two different types of rocker covers used on them over the years? .
Spotted this last weekend.
Just curious is all.

Hmmmm, could be. With the second pic being the same as my ABY cover, that'd maybe make the top pic an eariler one?
Nice idea mate, never considered that even though I was posting about that yesterday.

It's interesting that there are any differences between a cam cover ("cylinder head cover" in ETKA) but there are two different part numbers.
1992 and beyond AAN = 034 103 469 D
1992 and beyond ABY = 034 103 469 F
1994 and beyond ADU = 034 103 469 F (same as ABY)
Since the Cam Position Sensor (CPS) on all but the very earliest AAN and ABYs is behind the exhaust cam sprocket and there is no wiring or any brackets inside the cam cover, there is no reason for a change between the early cars with the vestigial distributor under the intake manifold and the "normal" AAN. I would think that the difference between the 469 D and the 469 F covers has more to do with the intake manifold configuration than the CPS.

Thanks for that Dave. No real reason for asking other than my own curiosity.
I had already noted the "D" and "F" suffix difference, but just wondered why.
Strange how an AAN from 1996 (second pic above) has a cover listed as being from an ABY/ADU. Second pic above is a friends bog standard S6.
On another note (underlined above), I've never seen an ABY engine with the hall sender sited anywhere except behind the cam sproket. Maybe they'd got that out of the way with the earlier AAN's before the ABY appeared?.
The only difference I've ever seen between an early and a late ABY engine is the routing of the fuel pipes to the fuel pressure regulator. Earliest ABY's seemed to retain the braided fuel pipes that went up and over the top of the inlet manifold exactly like the 3B, later they disappeared from view.
But thats another topic.
I like a good puzzle
Thanks again chaps.

My guess(es) about the S6 sporting a 469 F ADY/ADU cover would include: 1) they ran out of 469 D covers but had a load of 469 F covers in the bin when they were assembling the engine or 2) somewhere along the line, for some reason, the covers were swapped, maybe because somebody wanted to polish one and not the other (WAG).
On the ABY ever having a vesitgial distributor ("dizzy"), I could be wrong. I know that UrS4 with early build dates (08/91 to 02/92) are more likely than not to show up with a Hall Sender in a can of tuna. Since ETKA shows that the 91 S2s may have had either 3Bs or ABYs, I concluded that the early ABYs may also have had the "tuna can".
It is interesting that ETKA does not list the "tuna can" for even the earliest AANs (or ABYs). However, I know they exist and are even shown in the Bentley manual instead of the later style behind the cam sprocket.

ABY's didn't have a dizzy AAN's did. Due to the inltet manifold of the ABY and ADU it wouldn't have fit in the standard position.
Hmm, but then the 3B had the same style inlet as the ABY/ADU, ok slighter smaller volume I think, but still the same style with a dizzy under the back right corner.
Looking at picture one again, it seems it's raised up quite a bit on the inlet cam side. But why is the question.
What style have you S4/S6 guys got out there? Pic one or pic two?

3B Members like Jonny Boy had to have the RS2 IM chopped to fit over the dizzy in the early days as it wasn't a direct fit

No UrS6s had a "dizzy". Some very early UrS4s (6/91 to 2/92) had a Hall Sender in a tuna can in the same location as the 3B distributor. Different intake manifold than either the 3B or ABY or ADU so clearance wasn't a problem. Somewhere after 2/92 there was only the CPS behind the exhaust cam sprocket.
