Dif'ference between 3b and aby bottom end

Will the head and all the other bits from a 3b fit onto an ABY bottom end, and then fit straight in to my coupe

    Cheers. Lou

Lou, you will need to check the mounting you have for the engine and wiring obviously. But bottom end will fit either

The water pump arrangement is slightly different of course but it should go together ok using ABY parts obviously.

Sorry I don't think I have exsplained my self very well.I have a 3b coupe, and one of the cylinder linnings is damaged, and my engineer say he dos'nt think it can be repaired,so I need a new bottom end,I have found an ABY bottom end,and want to know if I can use it. So are you saying I also need aby waterpump and engine mounts or would my bits just swop over, including the oil pump. all of which are new on my car.

        Many thanks LOU

Yes i understand what you are saying, i mean you will need the ABY water pump, tensioner, cambelt etc because the 3b uses the water pump to tension the belt and the ABY has a seperate tensioner. If your aby block doesnt have these parts you'll need to get them. I dont know about the oil pump though, if they are the same or not. Engine mounts are the same i think.

Or you can use the parts from your 3B's old block and transfer them across to the ABY block

The 3B waterpump doesn't fit the ABY block hence the need to use the ABY pump and cambelt.

The pump is a cheap item at least and would make sense to use new parts to keep it all fresh as to change it is essentially most of the way to a new cambelt anyway.

Hope you get things sorted out mate cos sounds like you're not having the best of luck at the moment

The ABY block is the same as the 3B. I have both here. Of course the water pump is different.
If you want to use just the ABY block, just bolt all your 3B stuff to it.

3B water pump will fit ABY block and vice versa. The only differencies are that ABY block has mounting holes for the newer style cambelt tensioner and dip stick pipe hole is slightly different. IIRC ABY oil pump doesn't have a place for the fixed cam belt roller that 3B uses but pumps are otherwise intechangeable.

Porkis is correct the ABY oil pump does not have the provision for the relay roller, you need to either

                        ABY water pump
                        ABY relay roller and mounting
                        ABY timing belt

or to use the Block within the 3B 'bay

Change to the 3B oil pump and just use normal 3B stuff

ABY oil pump costs a bloomin fortune so maybe best to stick with the 3B setup there. Crank pully and flywheel are different too but you can use your old 3B ones, there is only the issue of having the bottom end balanced if you change flywheel/pully. Not sure if that is required or not.
