    RS2 Cam timing thoughts....

Having decided to change the timing chain whilst still chuffin waiting for my piston rings I have quick question (as I had had a beer and not noticed before stripping )
I know the RS2 times the cam a tooth back on the cam pulley to cam cover mark BUT,, are the two "0"s on the cam chain gears then missaligned?
So is it one tooth back on the cam pulley with "0" and "0" aligned or
Cam pulley one tooth back, "0"s missaligned (as though they were installed aligned then moved to time up the cam belt).
I hope you get what I mean!!
The later way looks the right way but I just wanted to check,.Did a search and found plenty on the external timing but not between the two cams.

    Any help muchos appeciated!

Yeh thats right, there's pictures in the gallery of the RS2 timing and theres one on the forum ( can't remember where ) showing the timing as you described.

If it wasn't correct you wouldn't get boost

I would guess all the marks should line up together. It must be when Porsche decided to mod the water pump with a smaller pulley on the tensioned side of the belt, that the marks were then unalligned. Even though that doesn't sound very German.

          Cheers fellas,
Seems to GO ok, and I agree, its not very German, We know the belt timing is misaligned, its the inside bit that gets ya scratching your head..!
I hunted for hours last night and found:
RS2 Avant: ADU designated 2.22 liter 20V Turbocharged engine
          Intake open 13 degrees
          Intake Closes 35 degrees
          Exhaust open before 24 degrees
          Exhaust close 1 degree
          Exhaust lift 9.5mm

Will be boring job checking it using dail gauges and seeing if its the same as above..

          Thanks again,
          Rob..

the 0's on the cams are ALWAYS lined up. Then when all tightened up you turn the cam back a little until the belt fits into the teeth. About 1/2 notch normally. Very poor design. If you turn them the other way then you get a hall sender fault code and low power (limp mode).

sorry for replying in this old topic.

When the timingbelt is on and the camgear is 1/2 to the left (when you stand in front of the engine), should the 0's on the cams line up, or schould they line up when the arrow on the camgear points to the line on the camcover

Line the Os up then set the belt at a tooth to the left. Stood at the front of the engine.
