    S2 Avant Grey/blue Smoke

I have searched through the S2 forum looking for guidance on the problem i have just recently developed. The car has started to blow blue/grey smoke from exhaust, which tells me i am burning oil. However as there are no manuals etc and i am struggling to solve the problem.

The car on start up is fine - no smoke.
Whilst driving (after 100 yards) i get a plume of smoke. I then get the plume of smoke whilst normal driving (not heavy footed 3k revs max) and going through the gears. It is during this start period (2-5 mins) that the car develops it's red indian ancestory and sends thick smoke signals, which causes some irrate finger gesturing from drivers following me.
Whilst driving to work (12 mile journey) it smokes as above then disappears, but intermitantly emitting the odd plume of smoke - 6th gear 2k revs. When i stop start during this period there is no noticeable smoke emmitted.

I have just had it serviced (133k) oil filter, oil, plugs, coolant, etc The oil pressure regulating valve was changed as well as the car did discharge a plume of smoke at the start up of the car prior to service. The car is maintining it's oil pressure and the oil is not overheating. No loss of water.

Martyn from VAG parts advised me to put this problem on as he is sure that this is a common problem encountered before. I am led to believe that it is the Breather System. So if anyone who has suffered this problem can you help?? I would be most S2 grateful.

Not wanting to blow smoke up VAG parts tail pipe but they are top blokes who offer great assistance and help.

Possible culprits, Valve stem seals , turbo seal & I had forgotten about the breather system which is a bit silly of me as I had the same issue on my old Coupe DOH!

Replace the PCV valve and check for leaks and clean the flame trap

Yeah, i had a look on the audifans website and cheers for the thread. The final point on that was everyone thought it was turbo, but no one confirmed and said had turbo recon'd and it solved problem.

I drove home from work last night, A45 Birm to Cov, some egit had dropped his load off the back of his lorry and was stuck in traffic for 45 mins. Car did not overheat (Yippee)... However the symptons came up again. No smoke on start up, after 100-200 yards of driving, smoke started to emit, a blue/grey smoke. THe BMW convertable behind me put up his hood!!!!

Is this the joys of owning a modern day Audi classic, shrinking into your drivers seat while everyone literally disappears behind you in a cloud of smoke???

Not driven car today, left at home. Going to attack the Flame Trap tonight and clean out some of the pipes. Where should i focus my attention on cleaning the pipes?? Those directly connected to PCV and Flame Trap?? or is there another area to look at??

Dear All S2 Owners - You need to read this as it vital information

EVERY S2 OWNER SHOULD CLEAN OUT THE BREATHER SYSTEM ON THEIR RESPECTIVE S2. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT IT WILL PREVENT ANY LONG TERM DAMAGE TO YOU ENGINE. I RECOMMEND THAT EVERY SERVICE YOU DO, YOU SHOULD AUTOMATICALLY CHECK THE BREATHER SYSTEM AND CLEAN IT OUT IF THERE IS ANY GUNK IN THERE.

If you have read the above thread you will know that i have had blue/grey smoke emitting from my exhaust. This has now been cured!!! YIPPEE!!!

I removed the PCV and the connecting pipes to the head of the engine. On inspection of the pipes they were full solid of GUNK... I have taken a picture and having trouble uploading it but will persevere... The pipes were solid and the flame trap was wedged further along the pipe at the next angel. I used thinners and WD40 to clean out the pipes and left to dry before putting back on. As i had to take the air intake pipe to the throttle chamber, i inspected the throttle chamber and found traces of oil in there as well as the air pipe. Thoroughly cleand the pipe.

Re-assembled everything and fired here up. Slight emit of smoke, which was to be expected as there would be some small amounts of GUNK left, but after taking her out for a run, SHE IS FANTASTIC. THE CAR IS NOTICEABLE BETTER IN TERMS OF THROTTLE RESPONSE.

In fact i got that carried away i a little bit of fun with two motor bikes and a Porsche Cayenne. Bikes obviously quick through country lanes but no match on A road and the Porsche was good fun on the straight but did not like the bends as he backed off - such a wuss!!!!!

SO MY ADVICE TO ALL S2 OWNERS - CLEAN OUT YOUR BREATHER SYSTEM!!!!

Thank you to Martyn at VAG parts and you guys for helping me pin point this problem and what to do....

              Bumping as it useful thread

              All,

Just read all of the threads connected with this PCV and Flame Trap and knowing that there is always a number of new S2 owners and ones that never knew, I didn't know about this and I've spent hours / days on this forum, but post # 5 above is important for all S2 owners to be aware of.

If anyone has any further info or experiences relating to PCV or Flame Traps to share, please do post same.

              Thank you to Phat HS2.

p.s. Please start a thread to advise of any S2 problems you have had and what the definitive cure turned out to be. Some threads start with a problem, but there is not always a definitive answer at the end of the thread.

              Kind regards to all.

                  There are,

but I reposted it to allow others to cop onto the potential problem.

If you know about it, agreed, you can find out loads about it, but if you don't even know about it, they will not know they've missed out on something important?

They may not have tripped over it on the forum. I was surprised I hadn't.

But nontheless, no worries, it's out there again for people to be reminded if it, or for others to discover for the first time.

                  Kind regards.
