I thought that would be the case. is it a big job taking off the rocker cover? I managed the get the dizzy off without taking the inlet manifold off just in case any of the bolts sheared and I ended up throwing spanners about the street.

I called Audi Glasgow again and they have 2 listed for the 3B one is £106 + vat and the other is £124 + vat. Both with £60 surcharge if the old unit isn't given in p/x. gave him my chassis number and of course mine was the more expensive. And even worse there is some kind of supplier problem so they have an ETA of 25th may.
I was thinking about that german ebay dizzy but I gave the part number off the old bosch unit to http://www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk/ and they said £85 with 3 year warranty inc delivery. So I gave the nice man my visa details. It was too good to pass up.

You should find the bits of the drive gear quite easily after removing the rocker cover (which is quite easy), be careful how you put uit back again, +bit fiddly round the front, and make sure you don't over tighten the rocker cover bolts... if you do it will leak....
Must be why the car just died eh?
Good luck

cool. i'll be careful and take my time. I really hope it was just the gear and maybe even the hall sensor that died. if the car doesn't start after this i'm going to push it into a river and forget it.

Aye - you might get it fitted, and a spark to the S2 by this time next month
Just hope it solves the problem eh? If so your next delivery might be a homefried ECU

haha. hopefully a bit quicker than that mate. soon as i got the drive finished I had the front of the s2 off to get the timing marks lined up and dizzy out. picking up a gasket set sat morn from eurocarparts so as long as I don't do anything really stupid i'm optimistically hoping for a spark by the evening.
then the next step will be getting the back quarter straightened out, along with replacing the back box.
step 3 will be convincing the missus to let me keep it instead of getting a 5 door
step 4 will be syphoning funds out of the joint account......
..... leading nicely to step 5 - the homefry. woohooo!!!!--------------------------------------------------------------------

by the way.. what's the odds of my missus finding the broken bit of the gear with her slender fingers through the hole the dizzy fits in? I don't know what lies beneath the rocker cover to figure out how far the bit could have travelled.
what do you think? am I dreaming? should I just stop typing and get the rocker cover off? aye I thought that might be the case.--------------------------------------------------------------------

Slim and None.... You guessed it, Slim's just left town...!
Its not a hard job the rocker cover... will only take an hour or so... you need to remove the throttle body if memory serves to get at the rear corner fixing....

awww. bye slim.
i'll be following this http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_articl...ver_gasket.htm and bagging & labelling the bits i take off. last thing I need is a pocket full of bits, the cover back on and no recollection of what they're for.

aaaaaahhhhh!!! mother fu*cking son of a b*tch piece of cr@p!!!
yep - it hasn't gone according to plan. having managed to get the dizzy out without taking the inlet manifold off, I set about taking the rocker cover off to get the bits of dizzy gear out. the final bolt is under the inlet manifold though so I ended up having to take off the inlet manifold anyway. new dizzy in, new rocker cover gasket, rocker cover on, inlet manifold on, leads on, turn key....... aghhh!!! buggration! engine turns over but doesn't start. i checked the coil lead against the head and there was a faint bit of sparking there. it sounded like there was a wee judder, as if the car wanted to start. couldn't get it to actually start though. there was a bit of hesitation as it was turning over so i convinced myself that despite setting all the timing marks I must have set the dizzy wrong. so I took it out and reset everything again. still turning over but not starting. and now i can't get any spark holding the coil lead to the head.
i'm just about at the point where i'm going to break it. it's just not worth all this hassle when I still have to fix the bodywork at the back. i'm pretty well balanced between clincically depressed and psychotically angry.

oh yes - and there wasn't even any plastic when I got the rocker cover off. must have fallen out when I took the dizzy out.
just did a quick vagcom and got this. no hall sensor fault but now have a G42. i'm starting to think back to earthing issues. i've seen other posts that mention the earths on the coil packs but I only have one coil pack on the 3B and the 2 cables running out of it go into the main wiring loom. I didn't have an earth running from the back of the rocker cover either so I clipped a jump cable from the main earth terminal to the rocker cover but made no difference.
i've got a headache now.
