my car says klunk klunk in reverse and at some road bumps

After investegating a bit, with the hood open and reversing with a some power, the front of the engine dives, and that causes the exhaust to rise under the car and hit the chassis.
The bushings on the transmission are ok, and have only a couple of millimeter slack.
So the question is, can one compress a hydro mount if they are blown?
Engine dives about 5cm at the cam wheel.

    Hi Steffen,

Isn't the snub mount meant to cure that?

It should stop the front end moving that much.

snub mount only takes up upward movement when accelerating (forward)

        Hi Steffen,

Not looked at it for ages...... Thank you for the correction.

Option 1: get someone to watch the front of your car from underneath when you reverse, from a car pit or similar

option2: try to lever the front engine mounts with a long bar and see if they are worn out. I think that may be the most likely,

also worth checking the gearbox mounts too, seen one of this broken on an S2 before now.

gearbox mounts are in top shape, took the gearbox mounts and machined the senter pipe shorter in order to reduce slack (just changed to a sachs racing clutch)
After that I keept touring up my 13 year old oem bushings

Time to get a big scaffold pole and lever the engine and gearbox around on a ramp.

Is the subframe ok on the body?

Engine mounts screwed onto the engine ok?

              Something must be moving.

Sounds to me like engine mounts.

BTW your car looks ace in your avatar, got any more pics?
