Rotor arm fell off, should it not be glued??

Just opened up the dizzy and the rotor arm just pulled staight off

I have had a search and no mention of the "bremi" one that i have just removed being used on the 20vt, but a parts catalog related it back to 1981-1989 audi 80,90etc etc...

Looks like its been arching loads of electrical dust/scorching??? is this normal? Also the plastic hall sender cover looks a bit worn from this to

    New dizzy?

    Cheers James

There was alot of dust and scorching in mine too, and was fitted with a Bosch rotor, so I guess it is normal wear and tear...
Obviously been replaced as all Audi ones were glued, but a Bosch one fits on very snugly anyway...
If you go to VAGParts , they WILL send you the wrong rotor arm, they will send you an 18mm tipped one, you ideally need to get part number 052 905 414c this is for the correct 11mm rotor tip... (I believe there is also an option from Toyota, part number 19102-02020 , but have not tried it.) You can also simply grind down the tip of the VAG parts supplied one, removing equal amounts from both sides (I had to do this and it works fine...)
I don't suspect the Hall sender is a problem with its discolouration, but I don't know... this is also available as a spare part... (dont know the number though)
    HTH,

your very lucky normaly they are a pain to get of but the rotor arm should not be glued on .as when the cap is on it has no where to go but the arm should be pretty snug in fittment.. not like a pr';[' in a shirt sleeve

I bought rotor arm and cap... originally I thought my dizzy was also fubarred, but turned out the locking plate and nut were not tight enough and was not holding the complete distributor against the head firmly.... might be worth a quick look at this before splashing out...

Play? Do you mean the shaft rotates alot, or up and down play? If it rotates has it got a plastic gear which has started to break up. Corey aka 034 are doing the brass gears again.

Sliding the shaft up and down you should feel a very small amount of play.

Picture shows the G40 hall sender (top trace) and G28 engine speed sensor as set on my 7A.

YES they should be glued. And replacements should also be glued, beware as 3B and 7A rotors are different IIRC. One has narrow tip and other has wider tip. But the 3B one is defo glued to the shaft. If it came off then thats possible why they are glued in the first place????

Rotor arms are usually a push fit, Audi was unique in the 20v application as they glued the bloody things on.
Replacements should have a little spring plate which holds them on, never glued a replacement on yet.

All new dizzys come with the metal gear btw, last time I priced one up they were about £160 ish and they come complete just ready to bolt on.

                          As I said above....

052 905 414c is for the correct 11mm rotor tip... (I believe there is also an option from Toyota, part number 19102-02020 , but have not tried it.)

I didnt glue mine, and am happy I didnt .... the spring plate makes it wuite a tight fit, and it sits in a notch so cant spin round, and once the cap is on how the hell can it fall off anyway...?????
I know Audi glued them on, but can't see why...

The last time I changed one I didn't bother gluing it. It never seemed to cause a problem. I thought the distributor cap also held it in place.
