    Head Removal parts

Hi Guys i hope that you are all making good use of the wonderful weather and are wearing proper protection.

Got a question for all of you buffs, I am going to remove my head and i am looking for someone or all of you to recommend what i need to do. I know that i need a head set and gaskets but does anyone have the part number? I'm sure that in a previous thread someone refered to replacing the water pump and the mention of a special tool to lock the timing. As this is the first and hopefully only time that i have attempted this i would appreciate it if you guys could help. I will post pictures as it is dismantled and probably be asking lots of questions so please bear with me.

But firstly any parts that are required please .

The Car is a 1991 3b timing belt will be done at this point also as it is @ 169975 miles,
I need to do the thrust bearing also but really don't fancy doing it. I am worried that this will lead to a can of worms just like 220BHP had

You will need an rs2 metel head gasket set from gfs all new turbo and turbo to exaust gasket from audi. Do a serch on hear for cambelt change and it will tell you what you need. Sorry I don't know how to creat the link, but I think its called the diffinitive camb belt change ,or somthing like that, good luck you will need it

What are you planning to do with the head?

You'll need the usual parts for the cambelt, top end head gasket set (inc. metal head gasket), cylinder head bolts.
I would also get new fasteners at the ready for the exhaust manifold, turbo and downpipe, as some of these can be a little stubborn. I haven't yet removed a 20V exhaust manifold that hasn't had at least one broken stud.

Are you removing the head just to do the head gasket? if so leave the manifolds attached, and even the turbo, just undo the downpipe from the turbo, and get a couple of mates to halp you lift it off as one lump, much easier and less gaskets to change.

How are you going to do surface lining of the head then ?

If it is needed then obviously the manifolds need removing (which is a lot easier with head off the car)

agree with Martin on this one any work that you can do on a work bench is way easier than the engine bay...a little more fiddly when putting back but will save you allot of time

The reason that i'm removing the head is because i am loosing oil from some where and there seams to be a bit of slick at the back of the engine benind the head. there is no drop in oil pressure and no obvious sign of a leak (no oil patches under the car) but i am loosing about 500ml of oil every 500 miles. I can only justify taking the head off for this reason and there also is a sparkplug stuck in NO.5 cylinder not causing a problem but i dont fancy breaking it with the head still on. I tried running the engine till hot and removing it but it only went 1/4 turn, also tried soaking it in WD40 both hot and cold and still nothing. Went to a garage and they wouldn't touch it with a barge pole said that they wanted me to sign a disclaimer for if they broke it, there only solution was to take the head off. So i don't feel comfortable paying the garage about a grand to fix it and thats not a stealership.

Before you go taking the head off ..check the seal at the end of the cam at the rear of the engine as this is a well known cause for that proble looks like head but the oil feeds down that side of the head and looks worse than it is ......Would try freeze spray on plug and see if that helps

This is more than possible to do,I have done it myself, you think it fits but it dos'nt,its much cheaper ,and trust me alot less work.As far as the plug, thats stuck fast,it will have to come out sometime, if the head is on or not. With the amount of work involved in takeing the head of I think I would try a little harder to take it out
