    needed another 100 hp

i have come to the conclution that my surfboards are causing drag and need another 100hp so i can get past them bluming caravans on the way to the beach.
starting to put together a shoping list . i have more or less a standard 3b apart from a milteck exhaust no cats, have just put on a rs2 intercooler and a rs2 air box i know a remap alone isn't going to do it and the standard turbo is only good for 280. so

turbo, remap, ??? am i going to need other things

You say it's a 3B - has the headgasket been replaced with a metal one, and are you prepared to have the bottom-end bearings replaced? If so, I'd go the RS2 route. If not, got for 280-290 on the original turbo, still darn quick and lots of fun!

If you have some $$$ to blow then a GT3071 or 2871 could be on the cards. Just be aware that the costs will go up a bit, and it'll be a little bit meaner...

Have you ever driven a car that has just had a re-map? If not I suggest you give it a try, the extra power and torque you get make a huge difference. You need to make sure it's done by somebody who knows what they are doing though i.e. not Superchips.

costs i know all about them might be a long term project but long term projects can turn into just ideas that never happen. so do you think it is worth even going for a remap with out doing the bottom end shells. 100k on the clock

I was running circa. 300bhp on a 3B with the paper HG and stock shells, no problem. It had 155k on the clock, Tom inspected and said they were getting worn and it would probably be noticeable in about 20k or so, but it had been running 280+ for a few years before that i believe!

I'd say go for the remap on the stock turbo, or plan on doing the HG and shells and then adding an RS2 turbo + injectors to the mix for a good 350. I'm sure the bearings can be done by just dropping the sump anyhow(?)

i spoke to a friend about if it was posible to change main bearings with the engine in place i think he said it was. i know the conrods and big ends can be done as there was a post not so long ago about changing rods with the engine in place. ideal way would to have a second engine and rebuild that but like you said added cost. and i have all ready spent shed loads .

~brainwave~ actually it's the big end bearings that are the weak point... main bearings should be fine...

You could always do rods at the same time, and make a torque-producing beast from hell, but then a new clutch will be on the shopping list as well. Again, cost pending!
