    Vacuum Pipe To Ecu Question

    Hi all

When re-piping the vac pipes to Ecu the other day, i found what looks like a small fuel filter without the paper element inside, obviously a vacuum accumulator, is this actually needed???? can it be done away with and piped staright through to Ecu??? or will this cause problems???

IIRC it's a water trap. I'd leave it there

Water trap, moisture trap, whatever. Its part of the boost/vacuum hose system between the intake manifold and the manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor in the ECU. Its there to protect the ECU from damage. Don't eliminate it. Make sure the hose clamps on it are on tight. Its a famous way of losing 60 hp on an AAN C4 S4 (fire wall mounted). The OE hose clamps get weak and the boost hose comes off the moisture trap and you only get wastegate spring boost levels. (BTDT - once)

Yes, i will leave it be, i have re-piped the original pipe with Silicone as mine wasnt very good, also there was a bad kink in the pipe just before the water trap, was investigating due to lower Boost than normal and discovered this, so i thought this was a possibility of my lower Boost Loss, still only 9 PSI and everything has now been replaced.

All the main hoses, Concertina to Intercooler, Intake to Turbo, Throttle Housing Hose, Intercooler O ring, All vac pipes etc etc, Wastegate Diaphram is ok and set right, Maf Sensor seems ok and Multi Temp Sensor checked and ok too???
Next step is Vag Com, but has anybody got any other ideas as to what might be the problem here???

          Regards Audimaniac

                  Hi mate
Thanks for your offer, i have another member Andy P nearby and was going to get it checked last week but i thought replacing the Boost hoses had cured the problem, but no, so i will probably be contacting Andy again this week to see about it, unless you are any nearer than Sheffield.
                  Regards David.

Just follow the two connections on the rear of the IM ( below the idle stabiliser valve). The moisture trap on my ABY is right under the strut brace - its coloured black/yellow and (as prev posts above), looks exactly like a small fuel filter. Check and recheck all these small connections. As others can testify, each "small" leak can make a great car run rather poorly without triggering a fault code or boost cut. The original crimp connectors ( Oetikker ) can be tricky to replace, small (good quality cable ties) are easier and cheaper replacements. Let us know how you get on. Unscrew the panel in front of /below the "glove box" and check your ECU and Air con recirc connections also.

Will do mate, i will re-check all the ones at the back of the head and to the ECU also, what is the little Three port solenoid valve with an electrical connector fastened to it on the left which is fastened by one screw to the bottom of the heater motor box?? does this have an exhaust port?? as there are three ports on this solenoid valve and only two are connected up??

The reason i ask, is that, i replaced the old vac pipes to this unit and also the vac chamber on the far left which the valve is connected to, i also found what looks like a type of bleed valve in the vac pipe connected to the little chamber,is this significant ??
