    Engine Not Cranking

Hello, I don't have an S2 but I'd love one. I have posted my problem on other audi forums but no ones replys and this site is really busy so thought someone might be able to help here.

I have a 1992 Audi 100 C4, I used my car today and it's very hot outside. When I went to get back into my car the starter motor spins but it's not cranking the engine or even trying, it just spins until I re-try starting the engine.

Todays I done this method about 7 times, and then the engine started and was fine. What could be up?

Starter solenoid is fried. Its not throwing the starter gear out to the ring gear on the flywheel. Either that or you have missing teeth on the ring gear. Either way, you're going to have to remove and test the starter and inspect the flywheel.

Agree with Dave .starter motor issues ...make sure the bolts have not came loose(that hold the starter motor) and the gear is not ingauging properly on the flywheel

OK, i will check that, but why would it be doing this when its hot (normal operating temperature for more than 30mins) and not when it's cold?

dunno but may I suggest inspecting the starter anyway because it might tell you the answer? then you can tell us if you figure out the temperature link.

Right i think the American termanolgy is losing us ...do you mean when you try to start the car when it is hot it does not start!!.......not turn the key and the engine does not turn over only the SM turning!!

If it is the first statement it could be loads of things....would try changing fuel filter first then check all vacuum pipes for leaks as it could be weak mixture.....or to rich which the lambda probe could cause issues.....run VAG.com on it to see if it pulls any codes

Opps, sorry I am english but was typing it in quite abit of a hurry i'll list what happens

              1. Turn the engine on (starts first time)
              2. Drive about for an hour or so, then turn the engine off (to park)
              3. Get back into my car, turn the key and all I hear is the starter motor and nothing is engaging (ie, the engine isn't making any noises like things moving around, just the starter motor spinning)
              4. I turn the key left then right to try ot start the engine, but still SM is just spinning, sometimes I have to keep doing that, and on an attempt the engine will engage and will start.
              5. It usually does this problem, when the engine is hot (90oC Normal Operating Temperature) and when it's hot weather.

I've had this problem for well over a year, but it's only happens when the weather is hot, it done it last summer and doing it now. Winter was all fine.

I'm more scared this time, because it took me 7 times to get the engine starting when usually it does it on the 3rd attempt (in hot weather)

If I leave the engine to cool down for well over an hour (even if its been hot weather) it'll start first time. But if I've been driving it for a while, then stop at a shop for abit then try to start the engine the SM will just make a whizzing noise

As URS4boy said, sounds lik ethe solenoid isn't firing the starter gear out. I don't know why the temperature should have this effect but it's probably not that unusual for an electrical component to behave oddly when overheating.
In any case it sounds like you need to change the starter motor. that said, maybe some of the more experienced guys on here have other sugestions?
