    Larger Intercooler

Right, before I start Yes I have used the search function Jamo!

Basically I am interested in fitting a larger intercooler to the car, how large can you go without having to hack up the front end of the car? I would like one large enough to handle a higher state of tune at some point in the future but still be fine running in the region of 270/280bhp for now. :mischeif:

Roughly how much can these intercoolers be acquired for?

                Thanks guys!

Beer tokens would be in order for anyone who fancied helping me fit an intercooler....no...? It was worth a try!!

Bo, would it be possible to fit an intercooler the size of yours easily without the aux rad?

Ofcourse, The Aux Rad only restricts space. you could easily fit a large IC with out one.

Would I need to hack anything up to make it fit?

                      Rob - this is quality!

You of course don't have an Aux Rad in there to start with, so you've got plenty of space to stick a bigger IC in. If you wanted to stay relatively stock, you'd do well with an RS2 IC, but there are plenty of bigger, very silly ICs around if you want to go up to very high levels of boost.

What are you thinking you might be planning? I'd say if you're after a sort of RS2ish turbo state of tune, the RS2 IC gives you a good temp drop without suffering too much pressure loss (thereby increasing lag and increasing some energy loss in the IC).

In either case yo'ull need to modify the cross member - bit of welding in a new bracket is what's required.

I had to trim about 10mm of some places inside the bumper, nothing drastic though and now it fits spot on.

As for Pressure loss. Na none of that. Its boosting to 1.5BAR now whereas before it was only 1.4 in the MRC generic chips.

Not sure about extra lag. I cant really remember what it was like before.

                        HTH.

Well this is something that I want to be doing over a long period of time so ultimately I want an intercooler than can take high levels on boost in the future but also I want it to be quite content running in the region of 280bhp and possibly higher for the time being.

After I manage the above I will be investigating the best route for power increases but I want a similar power delivery to what I already have, I'm sure you know what I mean by that Dan! I have upset a few very fast cars indeed around country roads but I had a run in with a friend in his 05' STi pushing around 276bhp and I'm pleased to say that he came off worse for it but it would be nice to have a little more power there.

I have also been toying with the idea with increasing the exhaust size to gain better back pressure, as this would need to be changed anyway for when it does have an increase in power. I know that by custom mapping the car with a larger exhaust and intercooler that there will be performance gains to be had.

I remember a fair while ago talking on the forum about what you'd have to do to get anything reasonably more out of the K24; do a search for a thread about "Stage 1.5".
