Woodruff key on crank pulley on 5 cylinder engines

Is this a common fault with the woodruff key shearing on the crank pulley???

I have now heard of 2 now.

Both on the 2.5 TDI 5 cylinder engines.

This almost happened to me a few years ago, just after I bought my 3b,it was'nt running right, so I took the bumper and stuff of to check the intercooler ect,and found that the front pulley had moved ,it had almost sheared the woodruff key of ,it was hanging on by the skin of its teeth, and had damaged the key way,it happens if the crank bolt is'nt tightened enough,350 to 400nm I think,if it go's then so do's your engine.

Yes it should be treated as a service item on a cambelt change.

It's documented on here one particular post by martynf of vagparts with pictures.

Also Dahback sell an uprated version although it's very pricey.
