Unknown item in ECU air line

    Evening all,

    Need your help again.

As I left brunitingthorpe on Saturday the car miraculously fixed itself in terms of being able to boost up to about 1.5bar as opposed to 0.4bar.
However, maybe it's me just thinking too much but the car seems to be down a bit on power. What is really bugging me is that ever since I have owned the car there has always been a whooshing noise coming from the glovebox/passenger footwell area when the turbo is on full song.
This last week, the whooshing has become really loud. It's definitely a lot of air escaping fom somewhere so I've started with properley installing my boost gauge line as before it was admitidely a bit of a botched job. That is now all installed with proper plumbing now but I am still getting a really loud whooshing noise.
I've just taken the small panel off that fixed just infront of the passenger door and found this.
It is connected into the air line that goes to the ECU.

    Any ideas what it is?

    Thanks in advance

    Dan

Looks like something that captures moisture before going to the ECU

        Thanks guys,
Glad it's not some botched mod.

Both pipes seemed to be ok. There's got to be something split or disconnected under there though. I'm going to take a few more panels out tomorrow and see where I get to.
I'll see if I can pressure test that "pot" to see if it's that that is leaking.

I'm really annoyed with the car though. It ran really poorly from the minute I got to bruntingthorpe to the minute I left. Just when I needed the power as well!!!!

        Thanks again.

        Dan

That the moisture trap (to keep, er, ah, moisture out of the ECU). UrS4s have the trap on the firewall, under the vented plastic cover over the POSs and the various connections. Its common that by now, the clamps holding the boost signal hoses onto this moisture trap get tired and the hose slips off. Its a treat when an owner is selling his/her UrS4 and doesn't know this problem, they think their car is down on power (bad things) and sell very cheaply. After you "steal" the car, for a few pence, you buy a gear clamp (or two) and magically find about 60+ hp (the difference between a 7A and an AAN or ABY). The UrS6s (95 to 97) have their moisture trap in the same area as you have shown. They are less likely to blow their ECU boost signal hoses off the moisture trap (for some reason).

Buy some new clamps. Whooshing will be gone.

also check the connection to the ECU itself, and while your're there, (right PITA) check the internal connection inside the ECU too, you will only need to do it once, but worthwhile for peace of mind....

Dan, pressure test it, stick your head in the footwell and listen for the hiss.

                  Thanks guys,

I had the ECU cover off yesterday to check the pipe that goes to the pressure sensor inside. Everything looked ok but did the mandatory mechanical engineer's approach to electrickery and blew on the connection for good measure!

I will try and rig something up for a pressure test as advised by Stu, think I have a fitting that may do the trick.

Am I right in assuming that under boost you should not be able to hear any whooshing at all. Just thought I'd check that first.

                  Thanks

                  Dan

Hi Dan, sorry to hear of your boost woes. Yes, you should NOT hear any whooshing under full boost!

Hope you sort our your leak.

                    Cheers,

                    Steve.

                      Update,

Well, as you can see from the photo there is some black tape around the pot.
I removed this to find it hiding a hole about 3mm in diameter

mmmmm, that tape might be struggling to hold 1.5bar of pressure!!!!

I've sealed up the hole and about to take the car for a spin.

                      Fingers crossed.

                      Dan

                        Sorted!
Is eerily quiet in the car now!
Have no idea why there would be a hole purposely drilled into that moisture trap.

Thanks again people, another little problem ticked off the list!

Probably to late to ask now as I missed this post.
Was there a part number on it Dan? can't for the life of me find the ****** in the FA and like to know it for future ref if possible.
No worries if it's all walled back up behind the trim as I'll fish mine out at a later date if needed.

                          Good to see it sorted.

Perhaps the previous owner made a hole in it to empty it

Glad to hear all is well and the car is performing as it should
