Many thanks Dave, that link has cleared a lot of things up for me..,euro car parts say they have the sensor and are quoting an Audi part number 078 905 381A,but the part number listed in the link is 034 905 381 ,whats the significance of the first three numbers?

Well, to review, the AAN and ABY engines want a 034 905 381 = ignition timing (crank position) sensor in black and a 034 905 381A = engine speed (rpm) sensor in grey to tell the ECU what's what. All the five cylinder engine parts (as far as I know) start with 034 (hence "034 Motorsports" dedicated (mostly) to the inline five engines). The 078 engines (as far as I can tell) include the 2.6 and 2.8 litre 90 deg AAH and ABC V6's that I know came into production as early as the first C4 100s (in the 1992 model year). I suspect that a 078 905 381A engine speed sensor will be very similar to a 034 905 381A engine speed sensor. HOWEVER, unless the parts fellow could guarantee that, I would hold out for the 034 905 381A.

Please before you start getting drastic with the alarm.

Check that the timming pin is still on the fly wheel, its a £0.37 part and mine dropped out, but i had already replaced the sensor as vag com kept throwing the fault up.

Mechanic got back to me tonight car is now running, when the new crank sensor was installed it cleared the fault code so thus eliminating the the timing pin theory, next was the factory alarm which they did a partial uninstall to see if the immobilliser was inhibiting the car to start....no joy there.Turns out the timing belt had slipped by 2 teeth and when reset the car started.5 weeks this saga has taken to resolve now I have to look forward to a big labour bill!
